Box Score Stockton, Calif. - Behind a four-run third inning the Pacific softball team posted a 6-5 win over Saint Mary's in the season finale Saturday at Bill Simoni Field. Cassidy Gustafson drove in three runs while Dani Bonnet earned her ninth win of the season on her Senior Day.
The Tigers jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held on despite a late surge from the Gaels, as Bonnet punched out Loralie Fitzpatrick to end the game with the tying run on second. Bonnet struck out three while allowing nine hits in the victory.
Gustafson was two-for-three with an RBI single in the first, and a two-run double in the fourth.
Nicole Zapotoczny homered and scored two runs, while Rachel Sellers was one-for-three with an RBI. Leadoff hitter Sara Anderson picked up two hits, and scored two runs with a stolen base.
Pacific ends the regular season at 19-36 overall, 7-8 in West Coast Conference play, while Saint Mary's falls to 21-32 overall, 5-10 in WCC action.
After a 1-2-3 top of the first, Anderson singled and stole second base, and came in to score on Gustafson's single to center.
In the third inning, Pacific put four on the board as Anderson roped a one-out double to the left centerfield gap. Molly Bourne laced a single to left, and after a walk to Zapotoczny, Gustafson ripped a double down the left field line to plate two runs and chase Saint Mary's starter Katie Moss. Sellers greeted Lujane Mussadi with a two-run single to left as the Tigers stretched their lead to 5-0.
The Gaels cut into the deficit in the top of the fourth with a lead-off single before Andrea Hazel lofted a two-run homer to right field. Bonnet escaped further damage with a strikeout to end the frame.
Zapotoczny slammed the first pitch of the bottom of the fifth over the wall in center for her 10th home run of the season, moving her into third on the WCC leaderboard in homers, and giving Pacific a 6-2 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Hazel reached with a walk and Fitzpatrick followed with her ninth home run of the year, to left center, to trim the Tigers' lead to 6-4. The next batter, Sarah Lira, curled a long fly down the left field line just over the pole for a solo home run to bring the Gaels within one run. Following a single to left, Bonnet threw out the lead runner on a sacrifice bunt attempt and forced a infield pop-up for the second out before fanning Shannon Low on an 0-2 pitch.
The Tigers put two on in the bottom of the sixth, but Katlyn Whitt, Saint Mary's third pitcher of the day, fielded a come backer to end the inning.
Hailey Sparacino led off the top of the seventh with a single to center, but first basewoman Alex Steinmehl threw out the lead runner on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Bonnet coaxed a pop-up to Steinmehl at first for the second out, and then got Fitzpatrick to go around on a check swing to end the ballgame.
All three of Bonnet's strikeouts on the day ended innings, as she wrapped up her senior day with the win.
In addition to her pivotal plays in the field, Steinmehl also added a sacrifice bunt on her senior day, while senior right fielder Kamalei Pitoy walked and had a putout. Senior Alexi Johnson started at third base and laid down a sacrifice bunt while posting an assist in the field.
