Pacific Sweeps Doubleheader At Santa Clara

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Santa Clara, Calif. - The Pacific softball team swept a WCC conference doubleheader from Santa Clara at the SCU Softball Field on Saturday afternoon, edging the Broncos 4-3 before using a combined one-hitter from freshmen Marissa Young and Megan Walters in the second game to beat the hosts 3-0. Pacific improves to 16-33 (4-7 WCC) on the season while Santa Clara falls to 14-31 (4-7 WCC). In an all-around effort throughout the two games, Pacific rapped 22 hits, including six for extra-bases while the pitching staff went 14 innings allowing no earned runs and just nine hits. Pacific has now won three in a row, and six of its last seven contests as the Tigers gear up for the conference stretch run.

Game One

In game one, Pacific sent RHP Dani Bonnet (7-17) to the circle as Santa Clara countered with Ciara Gonzales (11-14). Both pitchers worked out of jams in the first two innings as each pitcher received a double play from their respective defenses early in the contest.

In the top of the third inning, sophomore Toni Santos led off with a perfectly placed bunt single down the first base line and junior Sara Anderson connected on a triple to left field, her second of the season and second in as many games, plating the first run of the game for Pacific and giving Bonnet a 1-0 cushion going into the bottom of the third. Bonnet allowed a leadoff double to Cassidy Padilla, but was able to keep the Broncos off the scoreboard, setting the stage for the Pacific offense in the fourth. In the top of the inning, Freshman Rachel Sellers singled on the first pitch of the inning and with one down, senior Alex Steinmehl beat out an infield single to put runners on the corners for junior Melanie Habib. Habib punched a single through the right side of the infield to extend the advantage for the Tigers to 2-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Santa Clara struck for its first run of the ballgame as Breezy Bernard doubled to left field with one down, and moved to third on a Habib error. Jordan Newell popped up to second base on a ball that junior Nicole Zapotoczny lost in the sun leading to an RBI that cut the Pacific lead to 2-1, but the inning ended as Bernard was thrown out at home trying to score.  Pacific added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth as junior Sara Anderson singled up the middle to lead off the inning before Zapotoczny and sophomore Cassidy Gustafson pounded back-to-back doubles to left field to extend the Pacific lead to 4-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Santa Clara tightened the scoreline to 4-3 with a two-run outburst that included an RBI single from Breezy Bernard. Undaunted, Bonnet was able to keep the Broncos off the scoreboard in the sixth and seventh, thanks in part to some great defense behind her as Molly Bourne recorded an outfield assist in the sixth, getting Padilla out at third base and Melanie Habib made a diving catch in the seventh.

For the Tigers, Zapotoczny led the way with three hits while Gustafson and Steinmehl each had a pair of hits. Bonnet recorded five strikeouts, surrendering eight hits, two walks and no earned runs over her seven innings of work.

Game Two

In the second game of the day, Pacific recorded a combined one-hitter, as Young and Walters achieved the feat, giving the Tigers their first one-hit effort since Tori Shepard held Princeton to just one hit on March 22nd of 2012.

Young allowed just one hit over her five innings of work, an infield single from Bernard to open up the second inning. The Reigning WCC Pitcher of the Week went five scoreless, with two walks and a pair of strikeouts, inducing two double plays. Walters picked up her first career save, going six up-six down with two perfect innings of relief to seal the doubleheader sweep and improve Pacific's overall record against the Broncos to 82-7.

Offensively, Pacific tallied single runs in the third, fifth and seventh frames. In the third, Zapotoczny singled to center field with one out ahead of a Sydney Lahners double that put the Orange and Black up 1-0. In the fifth inning, Gustafson singled on a drag bunt and scored on a double to left center by freshman Rachel Sellers, extending the Pacific lead to 2-0.

The Tigers plated an insurance run in the seventh as freshman Molly Bourne singled to center and Zapotoczny doubled to left field, setting the stage for Sellers yet again. The freshman catcher reached on an error by the shortstop Padilla but was credited with an RBI. Zapotoczny, Lahners and Sellers all finished with two hits in the second game of the day as the Tigers completed the doubleheader sweep.

Pacific will wrap up the three-game set on Sunday at 12:00 pm right back at the SCU Softball Field. Live stats for the contest will be available via PacificTigers.com
