Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Fullerton, Calif. - On the final day of Judi Garman Classic Play, the Pacific softball team split a pair of contests with 2014 Women's College World Series teams, powering past No. 9/10 Baylor, 6-3, before giving No. 2/3 Oregon all it could handle in falling 9-7. At the end of play on Saturday, Pacific sits at 7-16 following the split.

Game One

In game one of the day, Pacific sent sophomore Cassidy Gustafson (1-2) to the circle to matchup with Baylor's Heather Sterns (4-4). Each pitcher tossed a scoreless frame through the first two innings, working around baserunners in one frame and delivering a perfect inning in the other.

Gustafson retired the Bears in order in the top of the third and the Pacific offense went to work in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Melina Huey worked a leadoff walk and with one out, Molly Bourne blasted her first career home run over the left field fence, giving the Tigers an early 2-0 lead.

Baylor stormed back in the top of the fourth against Gustafson, using five straight hits to plate three runs and take a 3-2 lead. After the Bears went ahead, Pacific went to the bullpen summoning senior Dani Bonnet into the game. Bonnet got two quick outs to limit the damage.

Undaunted, the Tigers returned with two runs in the fourth, as Sydney Lahners powered her first career homer to tie the contest and Gustafson followed with her own go-ahead solo strike, giving Pacific the 4-3 lead.

Bonnet allowed a leadoff single in the fifth but retired the side with ease, clearing the way for another Tiger rally.

Baylor began the inning with new pitcher Sarah Beth Tobin taking the circle. Junior Sara Anderson singled on a grounder back to the pitcher, beating out the Tobin throw, and Bourne attempte d a sacrifice bunt, reaching on a throwing error.

The next hitter, junior Nicole Zapotoczny, saw Anderson score on a wild pitch to extend the Pacific lead to 5-3, while Bourne went to third on a throwing error from the third baseman Caitli Charlton. Zapotoczny then tapped one to second and Bourne came in under the tag from Robin Landrith to make the scoreline 6-3 in favor of the Orange and Black.

Bonnet held the Bears in check in the sixth and seventh innings to seal the victory, sending the Tigers to their first win over a ranked opponent since an April 24th, 2013 victory over then-No. 15 Stanford at Bill Simoni Field.

Baylor represents the highest ranked opponent the Tigers have beaten since a win over then-No. 8 California on March 30th, 2011 also at Bill Simoni Field.

Game Two

After a game-long break, Pacific again came out firing against No. 2/3 Oregon. The Tigers sent freshman Marissa Young (2-4) to the circle for the first time on the weekend. Oregon countered with Karissa Hovinga (7-1) and both starters registered a scoreless inning in the first.

Young got into trouble in the top of the fourth, as the Ducks pushed across four runs, capped by a Lauren Lindvall bases-clearing double. Oregon chipped in two more runs in the third before the Tigers made a pitching change, bringing freshman Megan Walters in to relief Young. Walters retired a pair of Oregon hitters to end the threat and keep the score 6-0 in favor of the Ducks.

The Tigers battled back in the bottom of the inning, as Anderson reached on an infield single and Santos reached on a fielding error by Hovinga. Bourne then singled home a run and with two down, Lahners dipped an RBI single into left. Gustafson doubled to left to cut the Oregon advantage to 6-3 and Lahners came in to score on a wild pitch, slimming the Oregon lead to 6-4.

Three straight singles led to a run for the Ducks in the top of the fourth, and Oregon addd two more in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and a single to stretch the lead to 9-4.

Down to their last two frames, Pacific responded in the sixth. Sophomore Jessica Pasco and Anderson reached on back-to-back errors by Oregon 3B Jenna Lilley, setting the stage for Bourne. The freshman from Whittier, Calif. charged her second home run of the day past the left field fence, as the no-doubter cut the Oregon lead to just 9-7.

In response to their now precarious lead, Oregon sent 2014 All-American Cheridan Hawkins to the circle for a save situation. Hawkins retired the side in order for her fifth save, forcing Pacific to settle for the split.

On the day, Bourne went 5-6 with six RBI and two home runs, tallying 11 total bases and scoring four runs.

Bonnet saw time in both games, pitching five scoreless innings on the afternoon, holding opponents to a .118 batting average.

The Tigers will now return to Stockton for a spring break midweek doubleheader on Tuesday against Penn State. The twin bill is slated for games at 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm. Live video and stats will be available via PacificTigers.com
