Box Score Provo, Utah - Playing outside the state of California for the first time since the opening weekend of the season, the Pacific women's soccer team fell 2-0 to the No. 5 team in the nation, the Brigham Young Cougars, on the pitch at South Field in Provo, Utah. The Tigers fall to 2-10-1 on the season, while the Cougars improved to 12-1-1 with the home victory. For Pacific, goalkeeper Lena Perry tied a career high with 10 saves, turning away a Cougar attack that was poised for much more than the two goals they settled for.
The hosts remain undefeated at home, and have yet to surrender a goal at home this season.
The Cougars scored on their first chance of the contest, as Madie Lyons delivered a cross into the box, finding Nadia Gomes, who was able to create separation for a shot attempt with excellent footwork. Her shot scooted past the grasp of Perry and into the back of the net for an early 1-0 advantage to the hosts.
Pacific's first shot attempt came in the 8th minute as Samia Adam fired a strike on target that found the arms of Rachel Boaz, the standout keeper for the Cougars.
In the 20th minute, Perry recorded an exceptional denial of a shot by Lyons, using a kick save to keep the Cougars from extending the lead. In the 24th minute of action, Pacific ceded a goal despite some outstanding defensive pressure. Multiple deflections and blocks in the box went fruitless as a redirection found Michele Murphy Vasconcelos just outside of the penalty area. The junior scooped up the loose ball and fired from just outside the 18-yard box, giving a 2-0 lead to the hosts.
The 37th minute saw perhaps the best scoring chance of the evening for the Tigers. On a counter attack, Sandra Padilla broke free of the Cougar back line and fired a shot from well outside the penalty area. The attempt had aggressive spin on it, perhaps due to wet field conditions and looming fog in the area, and sailed dangerously close to the goal line. Boaz, playing out of position, had to dive to execute a difficult save to deny a crucial Orange and Black strike.
At the halftime intermission, Pacific trailed 2-0, but remained in the contest thanks to the work of Perry, who had five of her 10 saves before the break.
Ebony Ezeji and Lily Higashino fired second half shots for Pacific, but the Tigers were unable to break down Boaz or Hannah Clark, who spelled Boaz in relief for the waning moments of action. Madie Lyons led the Cougars with a game-high five shots while Boaz finished with two saves.
Head Coach Keith Coleman said following the match, "BYU has an amazing atmosphere and it took us a little bit of time to adjust. We made adjustments at halftime and played a much better second half. We battled hard and had some great moments. We will use this game as a learning tool moving forward. BYU is an exceptional team and deserves the number five ranking."
Pacific will return to action next Saturday in Moraga, Calif. as the Tigers travel to face the Saint Mary's Gaels at Saint Mary's Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 p.m. and a live video stream will be available via TheW.tv. A live stat broadcast will also be available via PacificTigers.com.
