Hager's Gem Gives Tigers Second-Straight Over Northridge

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Pacific freshman RHP Michael Hager surrendered just three hits and one unearned run, tossing a complete game victory over Cal State Northridge, 2-1, Saturday at Klein Family Field.

Junior 2B Tyger Pederson went three-for-three with a run scored and the game-winning RBI in the sixth inning as the Tigers took the first two games of the series from the Matadors. Pederson is now five-for-seven in the series with four runs batted in.

Hager walked none, struck out four, to improve to 6-5 on the season. He threw 87 of his 114 pitches for strikes, and threw first-pitch strikes to 23 of 29 batters faced. Hager went to a three-ball count on just one batter, in the first inning.

In the fourth, Pacific's sophomore 3B Curtis Gomez doubled to left with one out. Pederson singled to left and took second on the throw, but Gomez was nailed at the plate. Junior DH Jacob Goulder singled to center, as Pederson slid home to give Pacific a 1-0 lead.

The Matadors picked up an unearned run in the fifth, as RF Miles Williams reached on an errors, stole second base and scored on a single by 2B Tommy Simis, who was thrown out at second on the play.

Sophomore C Riley Drongesen was hit by pitch to lead off the sixth, and after bluffing on the first pitch to RF Allen Riley, took second on an errant pick off throw. Pederson delivered a two-out single to right for the go-ahead run.

Hager retired seven in a row before C Marty Bowen singled to center to open the eighth. Hager coaxed a ground ball, and Gomez started the 5-4-3 double play, and retired the third out on a grounder to end the inning.

In the ninth, Hager recorded his fourth strike out to open the frame, and then a pair of infield pop-ups polished off his first complete game of the season.

Northridge LHP Jerry Keel went the distance for the Matadors, surrendering one earned run on eight hits in eight innings of work. But it was his failed pickoff throw that led to the game-winning run coming in unearned as he falls to 6-3 on the season.

Simis picked up two of the three Northridge hits on the day as the Matadors fall to 23-29 an 10-13 in the Big West
