Pacific Baseball Falls To San Jose State

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Behind a five-run third inning, San Jose State took game two of a three-game series against Pacific, 6-2. Junior DH Tyger Pederson doubled and drove in a run while senior SS Josh Simms picked up another two hits.

The Tigers answered the Spartans' five-run third with a two-run frame in the bottom of the third, but had a runner gunned down at the plate to end the inning.

Pacific chased SJSU starter RHP Esteban Guzman after the third, but the San Jose State bullpen ran its streak to 10 straight shutout innings in the series.

The Spartans opened the third with a walk and a fielder's choice, but CF Andre Mercurio singled to center and RF Nick Schulz followed with a two-run double to the left centerfield gap. After a hit by pitch, LF Michael Gerlach tripled to the wall in left to extend the lead to 4-0, before DH Jon Nelson added a double down the right field line.

Freshman CF Tyler Sullivan walked to open the Tigers half of the third, and Simms' bunt attempt was perfectly placed for an infield single, with Sullivan taking third on a bad throw from third. Junior DH Tyger Pederson doubled to left center to bring home Sullivan and put Pacific on the board. Redshirt freshman 1B Erik Lockwood's sinking line drive to center was caught by Mercurio, but Simms came in to score making it a sacrifice fly. Senior RF Allen Riley roped a single to left, but the relay throw from 3B Tyler Christian cut down Pederson at the plate to end the inning.

Tigers starter LHP Kyle Crawford (2-3) allowed nine hits through five innings, with all five runs coming earned in the third.

Freshman RHP Bryce Lombardi tossed three innings out of the bullpen, posting a pair of shutout innings in the sixth and seventh. But the Spartans pushed across a run in the eighth on doubles by C Kyle Gallegos and Mercurio in the eighth before Lombardi punched out Gerlach to end the inning.

Senior RHP Chris Larsen pitched a scoreless ninth for Pacific.

The Tigers put a runner on base in eight of the nine innings, but SJSU LHP Drew Bradshaw coaxed a double-play ball in the sixth to escape one jam. Junior 3B Dustin Torchio doubled in the eighth off RHP Kalei Contrades, but was stranded at second. The Tigers put two on in the ninth as freshman PH Taylor Murphy lined a single up the middle, and senior PH Brett Christopher was hit by pitch, but RHP Mike Aldrete retired the last two batters of the ninth for his first save.

RHP Sean Martin (1-1) picked up the win, allowing a hit in two innings, tossing the fourth and fifth innings.

Pacific (9-21) will visit San Jose State on Saturday to conclude the split-site series at Municipal Stadium. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
