Kansas State Takes Game Three, 9-3

Box Score

Manhattan, Kansas -  The Tigers mounted a comeback late, but Kansas State took game three of the series with a 9-3 win over Pacific Baseball Sunday at Tointon Family Stadium. Sophomore C Riley Drongesen was two-for-four with an RBI for the Tigers.

Pacific fell behind 5-0 after the first and 9-0 after four before scoring the final three runs of the ballgame. Pacific had the bases loaded with one out in the eighth, but a line drive double-play ball ended the Tigers' rally.

Junior 3B Dustin Torchio (one-for-three), freshman DH Taylor Murphy (one-for-four, double), freshman CF Tyler Sullivan (one-for-three), sophomore 2B Curtis Gomez (one-for-four) and senior PH/1B Daniel Johnston (one-for-two) also posted hits for Pacific.

Kansas State (5-5) opened the bottom of the first with five runs on four hits off Pacific starter LHP Kyle Crawford (0-1). The Wildcats tacked on two more in the second off RHP Mike Hager on a single, an RBI double by DH Blair DeBord, and an RBI single from 1B Wade Hinkel.

LF Tanner Witt singled home another K-State run in the third, and the Wildcats added the ninth run in the fourth on an RBI groundout from RF Mike Kindel.

Pacific struck in the fifth, as Murphy doubled to right center and Drongesen singled up the middle to put the Tigers on the scoreboard.

Senior LHP Joe Spizzirri tossed three innings of one-hit ball, holding the Wildcats at nine runs.

In the eighth, Johnston singled off the glove of the third baseman, and after Sullivan poked a single to right, Torchio walked to load the bases. A fielder's choice recorded the first out at the plate before senior RF Allen Riley walked and 1B Erik Lockwood was hit by a pitch to cut the margin to 9-3 off of K-State RHP Johnny Fasola.

RHP Nate Williams was brought in to face Murphy, who scorched the first pitch he saw towards second, but 2B Dusty Maas made the jumping grab and threw to first to end the threat. Williams retired the side in the ninth as Pacific falls to 2-10 on the season.

The Tigers will visit San Francisco for a 2 pm Tuesday matinee with the Dons before returning to Klein Family Field for a three-game series with Creighton on Friday.
