Riley Delivers In Comeback Win Over Brown

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Allen Riley capped a three-run eighth inning with a two-run go-ahead home run as the Pacific baseball team rallied for a 5-4 win over Brown Sunday afternoon.

With two outs in the eighth, Riley, the senior rightfielder, hammered a 0-1 change-up over the wall in right for his fourth home run of the season. Pacific entered the seventh inning stretch down 4-1 against Brown starter Anthony Galan, but picked up a single run in the seventh and one in the eighth before Riley's two-run blast.

Riley also posted an RBI single in the fourth and finished two-for-four with three runs driven in.

Galan was staked to a 1-0 lead in the third, as Matt DeRenzi opened the inning with a double to right, and Will Marcal singled to set up first and third with no body out. Cody Slaughter ripped a grounder into the hole at shortstop, and the Tigers traded the run for a pair of outs, as senior SS Josh Simms backhanded it and fired to second to start the double-play.

Pacific tied the game in the fourth, as Torchio's grounder to second couldn't be handled and Riley singled him home with two out.

But in the fifth, the Bears tallied a pair of runs of starter RHP Michael Hager. Hager hit a pair of Brown batters, and with two outs, Wes Van Boom doubled to the right centerfield gap for a 3-1 lead.

Hager left after five and the Bears stretched the lead to 4-1 off LHP Joe Spizzirri. Marcal singled with one out in the seventh, Van Boom singled to center and John Sheridan added a double before Spizzirri escaped the jam.

In the bottom of the seventh, freshman LF Taylor Murphy singled up the middle to open the inning and 1B Erik Lockwood singled to left center to set up first and third. Senior CF Brett Christopher chopped one to first, and beat out the double play attempt, with Murphy scoring on the fielder's choice.

After Spizzirri and senior RHP John Prato Matthews combined to post a zero in the eighth, the Tigers mounted their comeback. Junior DH Tyger Pederson opened the inning with a single and stole second base. Pederson came in to score on an RBI groundout from Torchio. Sophomore C Riley Drongesen pulled a grounder into the hole and beat it out for an infield hit, and then Riley turned on the 0-1 pitch from Galan for his eighth career home run.

Prato Matthews (1-3) set down the Bears in the ninth to earn his first win of the season and give Pacific its third-straight win.

Galan (0-2) took the loss, allowing four earned on nine hits, striking out three. RHP Chris Smith recorded an out in the eighth for the Bears.

The Tigers improve to 7-16 on the year, while Brown drops to 1-10. The Tigers and Bears will conclude the four-game series on Monday, at 6 p.m., under the lights at Klein Family Field.
