Pacific Draws 0-0 Tie in Double Overtime Match at Sacramento State

Sacramento, Calif. - After two overtime periods, the Pacific women's soccer team failed to score against Sacramento State and concluded the match with a 0-0 tie despite numerous chances on Friday, Sept. 11.

With the knotted score Pacific moved to 3-2-1 in 2009 while Sacramento State ran its record to 3-0-2 on the year.

The Tigers' best chance in the first overtime period came off a clearance attempt by Hornet goalie Savannah Abercrombie in the 93rd minute as freshman Laura Hernandez (Seattle, Wash.) followed up and deflected the ball toward the goal which resulted in a block by Sacramento State's defense.

Both team failed to find the net in the first overtime period as the contest went into a double overtime period. The scoring drought continued into double overtime, as Pacific had another chance in the 103rd minute when freshman Maricella Padilla shot one wide past the goal. Three minutes later, sophomore Kristina Wavomba (Encinitas, Calif.) took her chances, shooting the ball from 25 yards out to the right of the goal. However, Savannah Abercrombie came down with her fourth save of the game.

At the end of the second overtime period Padilla put up a Hail Mary with :03 left on the clock as she shot the ball from 30 yards out, but Abercrombie grabbed down her fifth and final save of the contest.

During the final minute of regulation play, it was also Padilla who tried to end the game with a corner kick. Padilla could could not find her team in front of the goal as the game went into the first overtime period.

Starting the offensive attack in the second stanza, junior Kim Hargrave (La Palma, Calif.) kicked off Pacific's scoring efforts when she took one high over the goal at 48:57. The Tigers proceeded to keep the ball on their half of the pitch for the next 10 minutes, not allowing any opportunities for the Hornets. Freshman Kayla Villalpando (San Jose, Calif.) tapped another high at 52:26, chipping in the Tigers' eighth shot to tie the Hornets' own eight shots in the match at that point. From there, Pacific went on to out-shoot yet another opponent this season.

Off a corner kick by Hargrave, Padilla gained control of the ball and shot it towards the goal, deflecting off of a defender at 54:05.

At 58:02, Hargrave passed the ball to sophomore Angelica Figueroa (Linden, Calif.) who stood five yards in front and to the left of the goal. Figueroa headed the ball into the goal, but not before Abercrombie grabbed it down for her first save to terminate Pacific's first shot on goal of the contest.

Freshman Kortney Agdeppa (Lodi, Calif.) started off free kick in the 69th minute, when she dropped back for Figueroa to take the ball and pass it to Agdeppa in the right corner of the field. Agdeppa found Padilla in front of the goal, as she shot it to the left side and out of play.

The yellow cards came out in the 60th and 72nd minutes, when Pacific drew two cards, to Sacramento State's one. Sacramento State drew a second yellow at 83:06, allowing for Figueroa to take a free kick that went high and to the right of the goal when she took a shot at 86:13. Later in the game, at 84:59, Pacific was forced to play a man down when Agdeppa drew her second yellow and was ejected from the contest.

The first half wrapped up scoreless, as Sacramento State took eight shots with three on goal, to Pacific's six with none of those shots on goal.

Pacific's attack first began at 3:24 when junior Natalie Wong (Mililani, Hawaii) led off with a shot from the right side of the field that veered wide and to the left of the post. Five minutes later, sophomore Alex Topp (San Diego, Calif.) took the Tigers' second shot 25 yards in front of the goal, but was blocked by a Hornet defender at 7:35 on the clock.

Sacramento State got a good look at 17:43, when Elece McBride was without defender and unloaded to the left post, putting the ball back in play for Cori Shreve. Immediately after, at 17:47, Shreve came in from the left side and shot on goal, resulting in a Pacific team save.

Direct free kick at 31:20, by Padilla after a Sacramento State handball foul. On the kick, Padilla launched high over the goal, but Tigers regained possession.

In the tie, the Tigers took 18 shots with five on goal, to Sacramento State's 15 with seven on goal. Padilla led all players with six shots in the game. Junior Jill Medigovich (San Diego, Calif.) closed out the game with five saves, as the Tiger defense blocked the two other shots on goal. She is now averaging a 0.96 goals against average this season.

Pacific next returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 13, when the Tigers travel to Reno, Nev., to take on Fordham in a neutral-site contest.
