Portland, Ore. - For the first time in 2007 the Pacific soccer team was held without a goal as they fell to the Vikings of Portland State, 1-0, on Saturday, September 15. The loss ended the Tigers' unbeaten streak dropping them to 3-1-1 on the year while the Vikings improved to 3-3 overall.
Despite dominating the ball for much of the game including outshooting the Vikings 19-6 on the day and holding a 6-0 edge in corner kicks, the Tigers saw Portland State end their unbeaten streak with a late first half goal off the foot of Sarah Smart in the 43rd minute. Smart found herself in a 1v1 situation with senior 'keeper Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.) after a misplay in the Tigers' defensive third. She did not waste the Vikings' first scoring chance as she slotted home what would be the game-winning strike for Portland State.
Throughout the game the Tigers had multiple scoring chances as seniors Natalie McCrackin (Rio Linda, Calif.) and Mandi Van Dorn (Danville, Calif.) each posted four shots on the day with Van Dorn tallying one shot on goal. Nine different Tigers fired off shots during the afternoon, however, Pacific forced Portland State's netminder, Rachel Jarvis, to make just five saves overall.
Souza tallied two saves during the game while relinquishing just her third goal of the season.
Freshman Sammi Teramae (Kapolei, Hawaii) was held without a point for the first time in her young collegiate career. She has posted eight points on the season with two goals and four assists.
Pacific will be back in action on Monday, September 17 as they take on No. 24 BYU in Provo, Utah at 7:00 pm (PT).
