Stockton, Calif. - Senior Carmen Padilla (San Jose, Calif.) scored her first goal of the season with under two minutes remaining in regulation to lift the Pacific women's soccer team to a 3-2 win over San Jose State on Friday, Sept. 22.
The win lifted the Tigers to 7-1-1 on the season, while San Jose State fell to 3-5-1.
A very physical game that saw 34 combined fouls ended with touch of finesse in the 89th minute off the foot of Padilla, putting to rest a see-saw game between the Tigers and the Spartans. Tied at two goals a piece, Padilla worked her way to the left baseline at which she touched the ball past her lone defender and fired a shot across goal and into the net.
Before Padilla's heroics, junior Mandi Van Dorn (Danville, Calif.) put on a scoring show for the home crowd notching two goals for the Tigers. Van Dorn got the scoring off to a quick start, netting just 4:32 into the contest as she took a pass on the left side of the 18 box and struck the ball far post for the score. The goal was setup by sophomore Laura King (Livermore, Calif.) from the top of the 18.
Van Dorn's second goal of the game came in the 62nd minute, evening the contest at 2-2. Off of a set corner, Van Dorn came flying into the action, heading home a strike by senior Suzy Peterson (Granite Bay, Calif.) from the right corner. The goals were Van Dorn's third and fourth of the season, giving her the team lead in points (9) and goals.
The Tigers first two goals book-ended the Spartans' strikes as San Jose State scored in both the 40th and 59th minutes. The first goal for the Spartans came off a stolen clearance on the left sideline. Off the Tiger miscue, Nicole Martinez laid in a ball to the middle of the box from which Kisten Krale volleyed in the first strike.
Briefly the Spartans took the lead in the contest Cynthia Pinkney took a foul near the left corner to setup the scoring chance. Off the free kick, San Jose State setup a corner play which resulted in a header goal for Jennifer Guadagnolo.
Overall, the Tigers outshot the Spartans 20-16 on the night while junior Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.) posted six saves in net for Pacific. Her counterpart, Marissa Dayton, tallied six saves while the Spartans posted two team saves.
