Pacific Stays Perfect With A 1-0, Double Overtime, Win At Colorado College

Sept. 1, 2006

Colorado Springs, Colo. - For the third consecutive game, the Pacific women's soccer team and junior 'keeper Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.) posted a clean sheet, shutting out Colorado College, 1-0 in double overtime, on Friday, Sept. 1. The win moved the Tigers to 3-0 on the season while Colorado College fell to 1-1.

Freshman Alysse Valenzuela (Stockton, Calif.) picked a prime spot to score her first collegiate goal, waiting until the second overtime and the 107th minute of the contest to push the Tigers to victory. Pacific's freshman forward put the long day to rest with just 3:02 to play in the game as she took a feed from junior Bunny Dickson (Millbrae, Calif.) and threaded a shot past Geneva Sills for the game-winning goal. On the day, Valenzuela led all attackers with four shots, including three on goal.

In net, Souza continued her dominant play in 2006, propelling away seven of Colorado College's 11 shots. The Tigers outshot their opponent for the third consecutive game, holding a slight 13-11 edge while giving up more than two shots in the second half for the first time this season. Sills stopped seven shots as well for Colorado College, but was tagged for her first loss of the season.

The quintet of freshman for Pacific saw the field for the first time this season with freshmen Lydia Jackson (El Cajon, Calif.) and Katie Ward (Sacramento, Calif.) each playing their first collegiate game. Freshman Chelsea Gomes (Coto de Caza, Calif.) started for the third time as she has played an integral part in a Tigers' backfield that has remained unblemished in 2006.

The start of the game was delayed 77 minutes due to lightning. Colorado College's first game of the season was cut short due to the same cause, a 2-0 shutout of UC Riverside.

Pacific's road victory snapped a 14 game home winning streak for Colorado College and marked the first victory away from Stagg Memorial Stadium for the Tigers in six attempts dating back to last season.

The Tigers will be back in action as they travel to Air Force to take on the Falcons on Sunday, Sept. 3. The game is scheduled for 11:00 am (PT).
