Sept. 11, 2005

Box Score

San Jose, Calif. - Playing their third overtime contest of 2005, the Pacific women's soccer team took home a 2-1, double overtime, road win over San Jose State on Sunday, September 11. With the win the Tigers improved to 4-1-1 overall while the Spartans fell to 0-7-0 on the season.

Forced into a second overtime after being unable to crack the Spartans defense in the second half and first overtime, the Tigers took advantage of a mental mistake by the Spartans to notch their game-winner. The late heroics were provided by junior Jennifer Smiley (Carmichael, Calif.) who notched her second goal of the season and her first career game-winner on a direct free kick just outside the Spartans' penalty box. Smiley hit a bending ball into the upper corner of the goal after the Tigers were rewarded with a direct free kick as a handball was called on the Spartans' defense.

The Tigers' took control of the game early as their 2005 offensive leader, sophomore Mandi Van Dorn (Danville, Calif.) scored her third goal of the season in the 20th minute of the game, putting Pacific ahead by one goal. Van Dorn placed a header into the back of the net off a cross by sophomore Carla Vellutini (Elk Grove, Calif.). The goal gave Van Dorn her eighth and ninth points of the season, increasing her team lead to four points. The assist was Vellutini's first of the season and her fifth point of the year.

Coming into the game at the half, junior Laura Guerin (Swampscott, Mass.) notched two saves on the day in 56:36 minutes of work. Guerin gave up one goal on the day in the 80th minute as Nicole Martinez netted the Spartans' lone goal on a header off of a free kick from Cynthia Pinkney. The goal snapped a 125:00 minute scoreless streak and was the first goal given up by Guerin in 2005. Sophomore Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.) left the game at halftime after recording three saves.

The double overtime win was the Tigers' first such win in 15 games dating back to October of 2001. After leading the nation in draws in 2004, the Tigers have posted a 2-0-1 record in overtime games in 2005.

The Tigers will next be in action on Wednesday, September 14 as they travel to Berkeley, Calif. to take on the No. 26 California Golden Bears. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
