Tigers Outlast Kent State, 1-0

Sept. 2, 2007

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Led by an early second half goal from freshman Sammi Teramae (Kapolei, Hawaii), the Pacific women's soccer team defeated Kent State, 1-0, on Sunday, Sept. 2.

The win moved the Tigers to 2-0 on the season, while Kent State fell to 0-2.

Pacific dominated the ball in the first half as the Tigers outshot Kent State 8-3 and held a 5-0 advantage on corner kicks. Despite controlling the ball, the Tigers were unable to find the back of the net as the game remained scoreless at the half.

The second half saw both teams raise the offensive intensity as Pacific earned two corner kicks in the first minute of the half. However, the Tigers could not muster a shot from either opportunity. The defensive momentum gathered by the Golden Flashes translated to their best scoring chance as Kent State's Caitlin Hester's header was nicely saved by Pacific goalkeeper, senior Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.).

Moments later it was Pacific's turn once again. Senior Montez Harrison (Oakland, Calif.) started the Tigers' attack by sending the ball from the middle of the Tigers' defensive area deep into Pacific's offensive end. The pass found senior Mandi Van Dorn (Danville, Calif.) breaking past the Kent State defense. Van Dorn raced out to the ball and chipped her first attempt off the hands of Kent State goalkeeper Kris Nelson and off the crossbar. Van Dorn's shot rebounded right back to her, allowing her a second chance that once again glanced off the cross bar.

This time Van Dorn's rebound came right to Teramae, who punched in her second goal of the season to give Pacific a 1-0 lead with 37:28 remaining in the game. Van Dorn got the assist, earning her fifth point of the season.

Teramae's goal proved to be enough for the Tigers as Pacific limited Kent State to just six shots in the game. Souza earned her second consecutive shutout to begin the 2007 season and her 16th career shutout, tying Souza for second place on the Tigers' all-time shutouts list with Megan Pickering (1999-02).

Souza finished the game with four saves in the game, while Kent State's Nelson had nine saves.

For the game the Tigers outshot Kent State 19-6 and held a 12-4 edge in corner kicks.

Pacific will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 7 when the Tigers travel to Hawaii to take on the Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine at 10 p.m. (PT).
