MORAGA, Calif. – Despite a career-best ten saves by freshman
Lis Van Herwijnen, the Pacific women's soccer program dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to the hands of Saint Mary's on Saturday at Saint Mary's Stadium.
The Tigers (4-7-6, 1-4-4 WCC) and the Gaels (11-2-3, 6-1-2 WCC) battled neck-and-neck all afternoon until a goal in the 87th minute by Sydney Middaugh snuck through to give the Gaels the result.
Van Herwijnen turned in her best performance as a Tiger to date, making ten saves in the effort defensively and surpassing her previous high from against Pepperdine earlier season. Van Herwijnen faced 25 shots, all of which she had no trouble stopping until the very last one that just trickled in.
Offensively, sophomore
Sierah McCallum and graduate student
Taylor Curtis posed as the most dangerous scoring threats for Pacific in the 90 minutes, combining for seven shot attempts and two on target. Freshman
Yohonna Bell nearly had an opportunity to score early on in the contest on a partial break, but the Saint Mary's backline prevented that chance.
The Tigers return home for its final two contests of West Coast Conference action, playing host to Gonzaga at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Knoles Field.
