Softball Returns Home, Faces off Against Sacramento State

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific softball team returns home when it takes on Sacramento State in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, March 25, at Bill Simoni Field.

The first game of the doubleheader will begin at 1:15 p.m., while the nightcap will commence shortly after the conclusion of the opening contest.

Carly Lucchetti and Allie Capello shined for the Tigers (8-14), combining for four hits, two RBI, and two runs scored at San Jose State last Wednesday. Lucchetti notched her team-leading eighth multi-hit game of the season, finishing the contest with two and scoring a team-high two runs. Through 22 games, the graduate student from Linden, Calif., leads the Tigers in hits with 23 and ranks second on the team with a .299 batting average.

Capello was perfect at the plate, going two-for-two with a walk, two RBI, and one run scored. Leading all freshmen on the team with 22 starts, Capello ranks first among the Tigers' first-year team members in doubles with five and RBI with eight.

Vanessa Strong leads the Tigers in the circle this season as she holds a 3.32 earned-run average in 10 appearances. In 46.1 innings pitched, Strong has only allowed 22 runs and has recorded a team-leading 37 strikeouts. 

Sacramento State enters the weekend after an 8-2 loss at home against Fresno State last Wednesday. The Hornets (14-10) have won three of their previous five games, including an impressive 6-0 win over Purdue at the Southern California Tournament.

The Hornets, led by Katie Marsh, have four players batting over .300 through 24 games. Marsh leads the team with a .370 batting average and ranks in a tie for first in doubles with four. 

Carly Morfey, who ranks second on the team with a .343 batting average, leads the Hornets with 23 hits and is tied with Lewa Day for the team lead in home runs with three. 

Caroline Evans and Marissa Bertuccio have been the Hornets' aces this season. Evans leads the team with a 1.95 earned-run average, while Bertuccio ranks first in wins with eight. Evans has only allowed nine earned runs in 32.1 innings pitched, while Bertuccio has accumulated a team-leading 54 strikeouts.

Since the 2006 season, Pacific and Sacramento State have faced off 31 times, with the Tigers holding a 16-15 advantage. Facing off earlier this season at the NorCal Kickoff, the Hornets dominated the Tigers and earned a 7-2 win.
