STOCKTON, Calif. – The #18 Pacific men's water polo team (11-11, 0-3) looks to soar high on Senior Night, taking on Air Force (16-12, 1-2) in the final home game of the season at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the Douglass M. Eberhardt Aquatics Center.
Last week, the Tigers fell in three closely contested matches, including narrowly dropping WCC decisions to Santa Clara, 13-12 in OT, and San Jose State, 9-7.
This week, Pacific has the one matchup against the Falcons, who enter the competition on a two-game losing streak after road losses to Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine last week.
Against Air Force going back to 2005, the Tigers are 10-1 and ride a four-game winning streak into Friday's home tilt. Pacific and Air Force last met on Sept. 23, 2016, in Berkeley where the Tigers downed the Falcons, 15-7. This year's meeting marks the first time the two teams will compete in Stockton and as conference opponents.
One player to look out for on the Falcons' attack is freshman Tom Leggett. Leggett set a new freshman scoring record at Air Force and became the first-ever freshman at Air Force to surpass the 100-point mark. He currently leads the WCC with 90 goals and 116 points and sits third in the nation in goals scored and fourth in total points.
The Tigers are led offensively by fifth-year senior
Rene Peralta with a team-best 31 assists and 72 points. His 41 goals are tied with graduate student
Stefan Vavic for second on Pacific. Vavic and Peralta are also tied for top 10 in goals in the conference.
Junior
Gil Gvishi paces the Tigers in goals (50) and shots on goal (132). Gvishi ranks seventh in the conference in goals. Gvishi and Peralta look to extend their season-long point streaks into the matchup with the Falcons.
Defensively, the Tigers have called upon primarily senior
Lewis Gale to defend the goal this season. Gale has started 16 games, owning a 9-4 record with 97 saves and 21 steals. Freshman
Benjamin Gronbach has also earned some important minutes in goal down the latter of the year, making seven appearances and posting a 1-4 record with 33 saves and six steals.
