Tigers Off to the Races in MPSF's First Open Water Championship

LONG BEACH, Calif.- Four Tigers competed in the first ever MPSF Open Water Championship this morning at Long Beach Marine Stadium. Multiple cracked the top-20 in the men's and women's open 5K in a pivotal test before season action starts at the end of the month.

Freshman Kyle Capili and senior Aidan Vulgas took to the sea for the men's 5K earlier this morning. The two kept a near even pace with one another, averaging 19:38 and 19:42 per km respectively. Capili clocked a 1:00.59 at the finish, while Vulgas crossed just behind at a 1:01.11. The effort earned them the 16th and 17th place finishes in the greater than 20 man field.

The women took to the open water right after, with sophomore Diana Chan and junior Madison Rishwain representing the Tigers. Chan placed in the top half of the field, with more than 40 swimmers competing. She averaged a 21:03 per km pace, clocking a 1:05.23 to finish 18th. Rishwain came in with a 1:14.22.

All four return to action next week with the rest of the Pacific roster as the Tigers host UC Santa Cruz in their first home meet of the 2023-24 season.
