Tiger Women's Water Polo Knocks off #20 San Diego State

Box Score SAN DIEGO – The Pacific women's water polo team (11-10, 5-1) won its second Golden Coast Conference contest on the road this weekend, knocking off #20 San Diego State (11-14, 3-3), 14-8.

The #16 Tigers outscored the Aztecs by a 5-2 margin in both the first and third periods. Brianna Utas led the team in scoring with four goals. Mariana Duarte and Emma Myall both added three. Lucy Davis and Hila Futorian also dented the twine twice with two goals each.

"Today was definitely our most complete performance from start to finish," said head coach James Graham. "WE still have situations to clean up to get ready for the conference tournament, but today was a great response after a less than optimal performance yesterday. I am especially encouraged by the mental and emotional resilience that we showed today."

It was the veterans that led the Tigers to victory. With the three goals today, Duarte now has 203 in her four-year career, including 52 this season. Myall is having her best offensive season in her college career, recording 22 goals to date. Utas has 20 goals, two goals short of her best season in her four-year career. She has 72 career tallies. Davis has 11 goals this season and 23 in her two years with the Tigers. The freshman Futorian has 27 goals on the season, third best on the team.

Clara Vulpisi went the distance in the net, recording 13 saves. The Tigers took advantage of the power play, scoring five times in six power plays. San Diego State scored once on the power play in four attempts.

Pacific remains one game behind Fresno State (16-7, 7-0) in the GCC standings heading into the final weekend. The Tigers have won four straight contests since an overtime loss to Fresno State. Next week, Pacific finishes the season with a single contest at home on Saturday, hosting Santa Clara (7-17, 2-4) at 4 p.m. at the Chris Kjeldsen Pool at the Douglass M. Eberhardt Aquatics Center.
