FRESNO, Calif. – Looking to begin a postseason run, the 21st-ranked and fifth-seeded Pacific women's water polo program will face 20th-ranked and fourth-seeded Cal Baptist in the quarterfinals of the Golden Coast Conference Tournament on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Fresno State Aquatics Center.
It's the second match-up of the year between Pacific (10-9, 2-4 GCC) and CBU (13-10, 3-3 GCC) after the Lancers grabbed the first 13-11 in Stockton on March 22. The Tigers led 7-5 at the half before CBU answered with a 5-1 third quarter to jump ahead. Freshman
Eleni Ikonomou led the offense with four goals and an assist.
Ikonomou was tabbed an All-Conference Honorable Mention and on the GCC All-Freshmen Team. She was one of three Tigers honored in the league's postseason awards along with All-Conference Second-Team selection
Laia Marsinach Ortega and All-Conference Honorable Mention
Ella Cowan.
Ortega leads the team with 42 goals on the season and 19 steals. Ikonomou has tallied 23 goals and Cowan 21 goals and a team-high 26 assists.
CBU is guided by GCC Newcomer of the Year and All-Conference First-Team honoree Emmie Ramirez who registered 70 goals in 23 games. She was one of two All-Conference selections from CBU along with Niya Bumbaca on the All-Conference Second-Team.
It's the first postseason and neutral site match-up between the Tigers and Lancers since 2016 when Pacific won 12-8 in the GCC semifinals. The Tigers are 18-12 all-time against CBU.
The winner of Friday's game will advance to the semifinals to take-on eighth-ranked and top-seeded LMU at 2 p.m. Saturday. The loser will play in the fifth-place game at 10 a.m. Saturday. The championship is slated for 1 p.m. Sunday.
