Box Score 3 Stockton, Calif. – The University of the Pacific men's water polo team went 2-1 at the season opening Pacific Invite on Saturday. The Tigers, who are ranked No. 7 in the CWPA pre-season poll, posted wins over San Jose State, 12-11, OT, and Fresno Pacific, 21-7, and loss to No. 4 Stanford, 15-12.
Jeremie Cote had five goals against SJSU and Stanford to lead the Pacific offensive attack.
vs. San Jose State
Reuel D'Souza broke an 11-11 tie and scored the game-winning goal with 1:08 left in the second overtime to lead the No. 7 University of the Pacific men's water polo team to a 12-11 win in the season opener. Earlier in the contest, D'Souza scored his second goal of the contest to tie the contest at 11 with 2:06 left in the second extra period.
The freshman from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada finished the contest with three goals and teammate
Jeremie Cote found the back of the net on five occasions. In his return to the cage,
John Hedges made 18 saves for the Tigers.
Pacific posted a 48-45 advantage in shots and both teams were 3-for-11 on the powerplay.
vs. Fresno Pacific
The Tigers continued their winning ways with a 21-7 win over Fresno Pacific in its second matchup of the day. 11 different players found the back of the net, including
Noah Schor,
Gil Gvishi and
Gianluca Caltagirone, who led the offensive effort with three goals each.
Pacific stretched a 7-3 first quarter lead to 12-4 at halftime, outscoring FPU by a 5-1 margin in the second quarter.
vs. Stanford
Jeremie Cote had five goals and
Matthew Hosmer added three in a 15-12 overtime loss to No. 4 Stanford.
The contest went back and forth as the game was tied at 2 after the first quarter and tied at 5 at halftime. The two teams continued its trend of trading scores as Pacific held the lead until the Cardinal scored two goals in the final 1:33 of regulation to force overtime. Stanford kept Pacific off the scoreboard in the extra period for the win as the Cardinal picked up a pair of goals.
In the win, Stanford managed a 42-31 advantage in shots and went 4-for-11 on extra-man opportunities. Beck Jurasius and Larsen Weigle each scored four goals.
Next up for Pacific is a matchup against California on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. at Chris Kjeldsen Pool.
