Box Score Davis, Calif. – The No. 7 University of the Pacific dropped a heartbreaking 13-11 decision to No. 4 Cal in its final game of the Aggie Invite.
The Bears (10-0) Nikolaos Paanikolau and Miles O'Brien-Schridde each had three goals in the victory. Goalie Adrian Weinberg had 10 saves for Cal in its second win over Pacific on the season.
The Tigers (3-5) scored 11 goals on 32 chances, including a 4-for-11 effort on the power play in the loss.
Jeremie Cote led the attack for Pacific with four goals and two assists.
Bogdan Djerkovic had three goals, plus
Djordje Stanic had a goal and four assists in the loss.
Eli Lule had a team-high three steals and goalkeeper
John Hedges had 12 saves.
First Quarter
Bogdan Djerkovic got the scoring started for Pacific with the first goal of the contest. The Tigers had a pair of chances to extend its lead before the Bears' Nikolaos Paanikolaou scored with 5:35 left in the opening quarter tied the game. Pacific came back with an extra-man goal on a shot by
Djordje Stanic for a 2-1 lead.
Matthew Hosmer added to the Tigers lead with a goal at the 3:51 mark to put Pacific ahead 3-1. The Bears clawed back with two goals to tie it at 3 before Hosmer put Pacific back ahead with his second goal of the quarter in the closing seconds for a 4-3 lead.
Second Quarter
Cal scored on its first chance of the quarter, but the Tigers came back with goals by
Jeremie Cote and
Mihailo Vukazic to give Pacific another two-goal lead at 6-4. Again, the Bears rallied to tie it at 6 before Djerkovic got his second goal of the day, this time on the power play with 1:20 left in the half for a 7-6 lead in favor of Pacific. A powerplay goal by the Bears with seven seconds before the half sent the two teams into the break tied at 7.
Third Quarter
The Bears' Max Casabella scored on an extra-man opportunity to start the quarter that put Cal ahead for the first time in the match. Cote tied the match at 8 when he scored on the power play with 3:59 left in the quarter. Cal counted with another goal by Casabella to regain the lead. The Bears stretched the lead to two, 10-8, when Marko Valecic scored with :51 left in the quarter.
Fourth Quarter
Cote got his third goal of the match when he scored :19 into the final quarter, cutting the deficit to 10-9. Cal managed to stretch the margin to three with three even-strength goals. Pacific managed to get within two, 13-11, on goals by Djerkovic and Cote in the final minute.
Next, Pacific will travel to the 14-team, three-day MPSF Invitational hosted by Cal at both Spieker Aquatics Complex and Legends Aquatic Center.
