Box Score STOCKTON, Calif. - The No. 7 University of the Pacific men's water polo team lost by a 13-6 margin to No. 3 California on a sunny Saturday night at Chris Kjeldsen Pool in Stockton.
The win raises the record for Cal to 5-0, which has started the season with five-consecutive victories. The loss for Pacific drops the Tigers to 2-2 on the season with both losses coming to nationally-ranked teams. Pacific got six goals on 27 attempts for a 22.2% shot percentage as four of the six goals came on the power play for the Tigers.
Reuel D'Souza led the attack with two goals. Cal scored 13 goals on 28 attempts for a 46.4% shot percentage, including a five-goal effort by Jack Deely and two more each from Nikolaos Papanikolaou and Jake Stone. Bears goalkeeper Adrian Weinberg had 13 saves in the win.
"Today, we learned how important fitness and organization as well as execution are to be successful on this level of college water polo," said Pacific head coach
James Graham. "Today was a challenge to see if we are at that level. We are going to have to work fast and hard to get to that level. I am 100% positive of the talent on this team."
First Quarter
Cal scored the first two goals of the game en route to an early 4-2 lead. Trailing 2-0, the Tigers got on the scoreboard with its first powerplay goal of the night on a
Bogdan Djerkovic goal with 5:31 left in the opening quarter.
Second Quarter
After Cal scored earlier in the quarter,
Reuel D'Souza scored his first of two goals with 6:36 left to cut the deficit to 5-3. A
Matthew Hosmer shot nearly cut into the lead but the attempt hit the bar. Cal managed to outscore Pacific 4-2 for the second-straight quarter en route to an 8-4 halftime lead.
Third Quarter
The Golden Bears outscored the Tigers by a 3-1 margin to stretch the lead to 11-5. Hosmer accounted for the lone goal by Pacific.
Fourth Quarter.
In the closing eight minutes of the contest, Cal scored three more goals and held Pacific to just one for the second-straight quarter. D'Souza scored his second goal of the match for the Tigers.
