THINGS TO KNOW:
- Last weekend, Pacific took two of three games on the road at Santa Clara to record their first WCC series victory since Apr. 2019, which was a three-game sweep over these same Broncos. Overall, UOP has won four of their last seven outings. Historically, BYU and Pacific have met 27 times, with the Cougars holding a 15-12 advantage over the Tigers. In their previous meeting, BYU swept the season series 3-0 on Apr. 25-27, 2019.
- Proving to be one of the toughest outs in collegiate baseball, junior James Arakawa currently ranks second in Division I as the toughest to strikeout as he holds a 20.3 at-bat to strikeout ratio. Additionally, the Walnut, Calif. native sits second in the WCC in batting average (.366) and sixth in total hits (52), stolen bases (9) and on-base percentage (.434).
- Enjoying a power surge in his second year as a Tiger, sophomore Thomas Gavello ranks in the top five in the conference in four offensive categories: on-base percentage (.448, third), slugging percentage (.587, third), runs (36, fourth) and home runs (9, fifth).
- As a team, leads the WCC in total double plays (40) and double plays per game (0.95 per game) as the Tigers also rank eighth and tenth in the nation in these respective categories as well.
SCOUTING THE COUGARS:
- Heading into the weekend, BYU has won seven of their last eight contests, which included a victory over No. 26 Arizona State and a three-game sweep of Saint Mary's.
- This Monday, Andrew Pintar was named the WCC Player of the Week after finishing 10-for-21 with three home runs, one double and one triple in four road games last week. Overall, the infielder also drove in eight runs, scored seven times and drew walks while tallying 19 total bases.
- Notably, this weekend's series at Pacific will mark the final road trip for BYU in 2021 as the Cougars are set to return home to Provo for their last four regular season games. Down the stretch, BYU will host Utah on May 18 before a three-game weekend set against Pepperdine. As of Wednesday, the Cougars sit in fifth place in the WCC with an 11-10 record in conference play.
FAN ATTENDANCE:
In accordance with state, county, and campus guidelines, Pacific will offer a limited amount of complimentary pass list admissions for families and friends of UOP student-athletes and coaches. No tickets will be sold to the general public or the visiting team fans for the remainder of the 2021 spring season.
The safety of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff is the number one priority as Pacific continues to adhere to all applicable protocols and guidelines for participants and spectators at outdoor sporting events. In compliance with California mandates, all game day spectators must be residents of the state of California, wear a face covering at all times while visiting campus including any Pacific Athletics facility and follow social distancing guidelines. Each spectator or pod of fans up to four individuals should remain in their specific seat area for the duration of the competition without visiting other pods or changing viewing locations.
