Tigers Advance to Saturday’s Competition at WCC Championship

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – Day one of the 2021 West Coast Conference Beach Championships took place Friday at Dockweiller Beach. The first match of the day went in favor for the University of the Pacific Beach Volleyball team, coming back for a 3-2 win over Santa Clara. Although the Tigers lost in the next round to Loyola Marymount, Pacific finished the day strong with a 4-1 win over San Francisco to advance to Championship Saturday's competition.
 
Below is a summary and results of each dual match on Friday for the Tigers.
 
ROUND ONE SUMMARY

The Tigers fell behind 2-0 after dropping matches in Flights #5 and #2. Pacific began an unanswered comeback with a two-set win in Flight #3 by Jenny Todd and Jadyn Tubbs. The Tigers evened the match when Hanne De Schrijver and Alexa Edwards won in three sets in Flight #1. An intense deciding match took place in Flight #4. Lucy Carpenter and Hania Taduran took the third set, 15-13 and ultimately sealed the comeback victory for the Tigers.

ROUND TWO SUMMARY

Top seeded LMU swept the Tigers in the second round with all wins in two sets. The most competitive match was in Flight #1 where Reka Orsi Toth and Selina Marolf defeated  De Schrijver and Edwards, 21-12, 21-16.

ROUND THREE SUMMARY (ELIMINATION MATCH)

After being swept in Friday's second match, the Tigers responded with a 4-1 victory against USF to advance to Saturday's competition. The first point of the day was a two-set win in Flight #5 by Kaelyn Saler and Illyria Kalaj. Carpenter and Taduran won in two sets in Flight #4 for the Tigers' second point and the dual match was clinched with a two-set victory in Flight #3 by Todd and Tubbs. Pacific picked up one more point in Flight #2 with a two-set win by Gabby Leo and Sedona Sherman.
 
With the win, Pacific advances to the next elimination round with a matchup against Saint Mary's on Saturday.

NOTABLE STATS
  • Pacific reached the second day of the WCC Championships for the first time since 2018.
  • The Tigers avenged an earlier season loss to Santa Clara with an opening round victory.
  • Todd and Tubbs have won a total of nine matches as a pair in 2021.

UP NEXT
 
And on Championship Saturday, the Tigers return to Dockweiller Beach for their second elimination match of the tournament. At 10:30 a.m., Pacific takes on Saint Mary's. Should the Tigers win, they would advance to another match later in the day. If the Tigers do not win against the Gaels, they will be eliminated from the WCC Championships.
 
On April 9, Pacific was swept by SMC, 5-0 during the WCC Mid-Season Invitational.
