THINGS TO KNOW:
  • Returning to conference action for the first time since the beginning of April, the Tigers took the series opener against Saint Mary's this past weekend in Moraga to record their first conference win of 2021 before falling to the Gaels in both games of a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 24.
  • Facing the Cardinal for the second time this season, Stanford previously defeated Pacific, 2-0, in their first midweek matchup on Wednesday, Apr. 14 at Stanford. Overall, the Tigers are 3-2 against Pac-12 opponents this year, having taken three of four from California to open the season in February.
  • Climbing the ladder with each contest, junior James Arakawa and senior Alex LeForestier are currently tied for eighth in the WCC in batting average with a .345 clip. Additionally, LeForestier is fourth in the conference in on-base percentage (.440) while Arakawa ranks seventh (.423). Notably, sophomore Thomas Gavello is also eighth in slugging percentage with a .522 mark.
  • As a team, Pacific currently ranks third in the WCC in fielding percentage (.973) while also leading the conference in double plays (34) and runners caught stealing (21).
  • Historically, the Tigers are 10-65 all-time against Stanford, including a 1-9 mark against the Cardinal over their last ten meetings. Pacific's last win against Stanford came on Apr. 6, 2015 in a 4-3 victory in Stockton. Notably, Pacific's last win over a ranked Stanford team came on Mar. 23, 2010, when the Tigers took down No. 19 Stanford, 9-4, at Klein Family Field.
SCOUTING THE CARDINAL:
  • Originally scheduled to make the trip to Stockton last Wednesday, Stanford has not played since a 13-5 win at Arizona State on Sunday, Apr. 18 due to COVID-19 concerns within the program. Prior to their shutdown, the Cardinal took two of three from the Sun Devils in Tempe as the team has won all eight of their weekend series in 2021.
  • Through 29 games so far this season, Stanford has impressed at the plate as the Cardinal are batting .293 with 206 runs scored on 296 total hits, which includes 55 doubles, one triple and 47 home runs. Overall, the Cardinal are averaging 7.10 runs per game this year compared to just 2.94 runs per game in 2020 as they lead the Pac-12 in long balls this year.
  • Individually, fifth year student Zach Grech has proven to be one of the most reliable options out of the bullpen, the right-hander currently leads all of Division I with 11 total saves in 19 appearances. Projected to take the ball for the Cardinal, Joey Dixon has appeared in 9 total contests for Stanford this season, allowing no earned runs while notching one save across a span of nine innings pitched.
