MORAGA, Calif. – After taking game one of the series on Friday, the Pacific baseball team (1-11) could not repeat their success against Saint Mary's (20-17, 9-9) on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Gaels in both games of their doubleheader at Louis Guisto Field.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
Game One-
- Similar to the series opener on Friday, neither team did much offensively to begin the contest as senior Henrik Reinertsen delivered early, striking out four batters through the first two innings.
- Getting on the board first, Saint Mary's scored one run on three hits to take an early 1-0 lead in the home half of the third. One inning later, the Gaels pushed their advantage to two on an RBI single from Coleman Schmidt on in bottom of the fourth.
- Shortly thereafter, the Tigers responded by trimming their deficit to one in the top of the fifth, plating two runs on three hits, which included back-to-back RBI singles from senior Wyatt Hoffman and sophomore Thomas Gavello. Through five innings complete, Pacific and Saint Mary's were all tied up at two.
- In the following innings, both bullpens would lock down their opponents as the two teams combined for only three total hits in the final four innings.
- Advancing to extra innings for the first time this season, Hoffman reached second in the top of the tenth after getting on base with a single, but the Tigers could not ultimately drive him home. In the bottom of the inning, the Gaels took advantage of a Tiger error to secure the walk-off-win, 3-2, as junior Marvcus Guarin overthrew first base on a bunt to allow the SMC baserunner to scamper home.
Game Two-
- With both starters experiencing no resistance through the first two innings once again, Saint Mary's scored the first run of game three on a sacrifice fly from Jacob Talamante in the bottom of the third to take a 1-0 lead.
- Adding insurance in the fourth, the Gaels tacked on two more runs in the fourth on an RBI double from JC Santini to jump on top 3-0.
- Moving into the later innings, the Tigers did not plate their first run of the game until a sacrifice fly of their own from freshman Colby Canales in the top of the seventh. Through seven innings complete, Saint Mary's held a 3-1 advantage.
- After senior James McClenaghan walked and Hoffman singled to begin the eighth, junior James Arakawa laced an RBI single into right field to cut their deficit to just one.
- Although freshman Chaz Myers would also reach base via the walk in the ninth, Pacific could not find the game-tying run in their turn at the dish as the Gaels hung on to notch the doubleheader sweep, 3-2.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Over the weekend, Arakawa notches five total hits in the series as he is now on a six-game hitting streak, his second longest of the season (13 games).
- Extending his own streak, senior Middleton pushed his hitting streak to eleven games with a hit in each contest of the doubleheader.
- On the mound, both Reinertsen and sophomore Grant Stevens delivered their longest outings of the seasons as each starter went 7.0 innings complete, with Stevens striking out seven and Reinertsen punching out five. Additionally, senior Hunter Schilperoort tossed his third straight scoreless appearance with 1.0 inning of shutout baseball in game one, striking out two Gaels along the way.
