STOCKTON, Calif. – After their previous matchup was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns within the Cardinal program, the Pacific baseball team (11-25, 1-11) opened their four-game home stand with a resounding 15-12 win over No. 18 Stanford (22-8, 8-4) to notch their first victory over the Cardinal since Apr. 6, 2015.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Getting on the board out of the gates, Stanford pushed across the first run of the afternoon on an RBI single from Christian Robinson in the top of the first to jump out to an early 1-0 lead.
- Shortly thereafter, the Tigers responded with their initial run of the ballgame as senior Alex LeForestier worked a five-pitch walk to chase Cardinal starter Joey Dixon and even the game at one through the first inning of play.
- In the second, senior Wyatt Hoffman gave Pacific their first advantage of the contest, 2-1, with his second home run of the season. Unfortunately, the early innings proved to be a back-and-forth affair as Stanford knotted the score at two with their second run in the top of the third.
- Cashing in during their opportunity at the dish, the Tigers regained their advantage with two runs on one hit and two errors in the home half of the third to lead 4-2 moving into the fourth, which was highlighted by senior Charles Middleton's first home run of the day.
- Answering right back, Stanford tacked on five runs on five hits in the top of the fourth to jump back on top, 7-4. With no action on either side in the fifth, the Tigers trimmed their deficit to one run with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the sixth, which included a sacrifice fly from junior James Arakawa. However, the Cardinal punched right backing by plating four runs in their turn at-bat as they were in front 11-6 at the seventh-inning stretch.
- Losing no faith, Pacific rallied in the home half of the inning for six runs on four hits to regain control, 12-11. In the inning, Middleton connected for his second long ball of the game while sophomore Thomas Gavello added an RBI single and junior Jeremy Lea tripled home two runners.
- Switching sides yet again, Stanford tied the game at 12 after fifth year student Nick Swanson allowed a walk with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth. Hungry for one final inning of magic, Pacific took the lead for good with three runs on two hits in the bottom of the inning, led by a two-run single from Middleton.
- Redeeming himself in the following half inning, Swanson would lock down the Cardinal in their final appearance at the plate by a final score of 15-12 as Pacific improved to 3-2 in midweek games in 2021 with the win.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Teeing off against the Stanford pitching staff, Middleton exploded with two home runs and a game-high five RBI for the Tigers while also extending his hitting streak to a team-high twelve consecutive games.
- For Arakawa, Wednesday marked his fourth three-hit performance of the season as the Walnut, Calif. native finished three-for-five with two RBI. Notably, he also holds a current seven-game hitting streak. On the mound, Swanson picked up his first victory since Mar. 14 at Saint Mary's.
- Overall, the win marked Pacific's first over Stanford since a narrow 4-3 victory on Apr. 6, 2015 in Stockton as it was also their first win over a ranked Cardinal team since the Tigers took down No. 19 Stanford, 9-4, on Mar. 23, 2010 at Klein Family Field. Additionally, the victory goes as UOP's fourth win over a Pac-12 opponent in 2021 with the Tigers having taken three of four from California to open the season in February.
