Pilots Take Game Two Over Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. – Unable to bounce back after dropping their conference opener on Friday, the Pacific baseball team (7-9) could not string together the necessary hits to even the series against Portland (9-8) on Saturday evening as the Pilots handled the Tigers, 9-3.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Jumping out to an early lead, the Pilots got on the board in the opening frame with five runs in the top of the first.
  • After junior Dylan Pottgieser came on in relief of starter Hunter Hayes, Pacific blanked Portland over the next two innings before scoring three runs of their own in the bottom of the third to trim their deficit to 5-3. In the inning, the Tigers scored two runs on an error and a wild pitch by the Pilots before senior Charles Middleton drove home junior James Arakawa on a sacrifice fly.
  • Adding insurance to their lead, Portland tacked on two runs in the top of the fifth on two hits, which included a two-run home run from right fielder Christian Cooney.
  • Just one inning later, the Pilots pushed across the final two runs of the ballgame in the top of the sixth to extend their advantage to six runs, 9-3.
  • Unable to record a hit in their final four innings at the plate, Pacific would go on to fall to Portland by this same score (9-3) on Saturday evening.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Creating a streak of his own, junior Ben Nemivant has now notched at least one hit in five straight contests after finishing two-for-three with one runs scored and one walk. Overall, it also mark's his fifth two-hit game of the season.
  • On the mound, junior Marvcus Guarin tossed his fourth scoreless relief appearance of the year, going 2.2 innings with one strikeout and two walks while only allowing one hit. Additionally, sophomore Grant Stevens also allowed no runs for the second consecutive contest on Saturday as the left hander has now struck out 3 Pilots in 1.1 innings of work so far this series.
