Baseball Stumbles in Series Finale against Portland

STOCKTON, Calif. – Aiming to close out their first conference series of 2021 in the win column, the Pacific baseball team (7-10, 0-3) suffered another tough day on the mound, falling to Portland (10-8, 3-0) in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Scoring first in all three games in the series, the Pilots got on the board first with a run in the top of the first on a Pacific error to jump out to the early 1-0 lead.
  • One inning later, the Tigers responded with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the second, which included back-to-back homeruns from junior Jeremy Lea and sophomore Thomas Gavello.
  • With neither team doing damage in the third, Portland regained their advantage in the top of the fourth with an RBI single from third baseman Ben Patacsil followed by a sacrifice fly from centerfielder Briley Knight to go on top, 3-2.
  • In the home half of the fourth, Pacific evened the score on a sacrifice fly of their own as senior James McClenaghan plated Gavello to knot the game at 3.
  • Shortly thereafter, Portland erupted for six runs on five hits in the top of the fifth to retake the lead, 9-3. In the sixth, the Pilots added six more runs to on seven hit, which included a three-run home run from shortstop Chad Stevens to extend their advantage to 15-3 heading into the seventh.
  • After plating two additional runs in the eighth and one in the top of the ninth, the Tigers tacked on their final two runs of the ballgame in the ninth innings, recording four hits along the way. In the ninth, senior Charles Middleton doubled home freshman Chase Graves followed by a sharp line drive single from junior James Arakawa that hit off the Pilot pitcher and allowed Middleton to come around to score.
  • Unfortunately, this would be all the Pacific offense could muster on Sunday, as Portland hung on to secure the series sweep by a final score of 18-5.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • As a team, seven of the nine Tiger starters notched at least one hit in the contest as Pacific recorded 13 total hits on the afternoon.
  • For Gavello, Sunday's longball marked the first of his collegiate career while Lea launched his team-leading third home run of the season.
  • Additionally, Graves tallied his first hit since his electrifying inside-the-park grand slam against CSU Bakersfield on Mar. 5 with a triple off the left center field wall in the ninth.
