Tigers Hold Off Late Rally in Win Over Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. – Getting in the win column for the first time this year, the Pacific baseball team (1-1) hung on to take down California (1-1) to even the four-game opening series on Saturday evening.

After falling on a walk-off single last night to the Bears, the Tigers got revenge by posting six runs on eleven hits as well as a dominant performance from starter Henrik Reinertsen.

IN CASE YOU MISSED:
  • Driving in the first run of the game, senior Alex LeForestier reached on an infield single to second base in the bottom of the opening frame, as junior Ben Nemivant came around to score on a throwing error to give Pacific the early 1-0 lead.
  • Answering right back, Cal would knot the game at one as Nathan Martorella drove home Darren Baker in the home half of the inning.
  • Keeping the pressure, the Tigers regained their advantage (2-1) on a sacrifice fly from senior James McClenaghan in the top of the second as fifth year student Joe Fitzhugh scored his first run of the season.
  • Settling in on the bump, Reinertsen would not allow a run the rest of his time on the rubber, retiring 15 of his final 17 batters while only giving up one hit after the first inning.
  • In the top of the fifth, Pacific would tack on two runs to extend their lead to three on an RBI double from junior Jeremy Lea as Nemivant scored for the second time. Soon thereafter, Lea crossed the plate himself on a wild pitch, pushing the score to 4-1 in favor of UOP.
  • Looking for some insurance a few innings later, senior Wyatt Hoffman continued his hot start at the dish by delivering a two-RBI single into right field in the top of the eighth, breaking the game open and growing the Tiger lead to five, 6-1.
  • Despite two runs from the Bears in the bottom of the eight, junior Zach Patterson would come on to notch his first save in the Orange & Black, slamming the door shut in the home half of the ninth as the Tigers defeated Cal by a final score of 6-3 to even the series.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • At the plate, four Tigers notched two hits: junior James Arakawa, Fitzhugh, Lea and Hoffman. Additionally, Fitzhugh and Nemivant also came across twice to score in the victory.
  • Impressively, two new Tigers make their debut on the mound tonight, as Patterson and junior Marvcus Guarin combined for two scoreless innings, with each notching their first strikeout as well.
  • Grabbing his first win of the season, Reinertsen finished with a final line of: 6.0 IP, 2 H, ER, BB, 7 K.
  • Through two games, Hoffman leads Pacific with 3 hits in 6 at-bats while McClenaghan is now up to a team-leading 3 RBI.
