Pacific Takes Series Lead Behind Strong Pitching

STOCKTON, Calif. – After evening up the series on Friday night in Berkeley behind strong performances on the mound, the Pacific baseball team (2-1) got more dominant outings from their pitching staff on Sunday afternoon, taking down California (1-2), 5-2, to notch the victory in their 2021 home opener.

Heading into the series finale on Monday, the Tigers now lead the series, 2-1, over the Bears as junior Dylan Pottgieser is set to make his season debut tomorrow night.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • For the second straight contest, junior Ben Nemivant came around to score on an infield single from senior Alex LeForestier in the bottom of the first, this time on an error by third baseman Brian McClellin. At the end of one, the Tigers led 1-0.
  • Despite only getting one hit in the home half of the third, Pacific would load the bases and tack on two runs to their lead (3-0) on another throwing error from McClellin, which was then followed by a hit-by-pitch from junior Jeremy Lea.
  • Answering back shortly thereafter, Cal responded by driving home their first run of the day on a fielder's choice in the top of the third, but could not even the ballgame as UOP remained on top 3-1, heading into the fourth.
  • Adding insurance, senior James McClenaghan crushed the baseball over the left field wall with one out in the bottom of the fourth to extend the Tiger advantage to 4-1. Next, LeForestier reached again on an infield single, scoring Nemivant for the second time to push the lead to 5-1 in favor of Pacific.
  • One inning later, the Bears added their final run of the contest on a wild pitch by senior Hunter Schilperoort in the top of the fifth.
  • With neither bullpen allowing a run for the final four and a half innings, fifth year student Nick Swanson would come on to shut the door on the Bears yet again in the ninth inning. Striking out two, the Stockton native locked up the 5-2 victory for Pacific while also notching his first save of 2021.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Sophomore Hunter Hayes dazzled in his debut as a Tiger, allowing no earned runs over four innings of work to begin the game. Overall, the right hander allowed only three hits with two walks and six strikeouts in his first Division I appearance.
  • Leading the way, McClenaghan continued his hot start at the plate by finishing just a double short of the cycle on Sunday. Impressively, the Stockton native recorded 3 hits in 5 at-bats while also scoring two runs.
  • Out of the bullpen, junior Michael Defelippi and senior Joe Solomon also recorded 3.0 innings of scoreless work, tallying one strikeout each as well.
  • As a team, seven of Pacific's nine starters recorded at least one hit in the win.
