STOCKTON, Calif. – Pushing their streak to three games, the Pacific baseball team (3-1) squeezed past California (1-3) on Monday evening, 7-6, at Klein Family Field.
Despite dropping their Opening Day contest in Berkeley, the Tigers have now won three straight and have secured the series win against the Golden Bears.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Wasting little time, senior Alex LeForestier singled home classmate James McClenaghan in the bottom of the first before fellow senior Bryce Kirk doubled home LeForestier and junior Zach Patterson just two batters later. At the end of one, Pacific had jumped on top, 3-0.
- Adding early insurance, the Tigers would stretch their lead to 5-0 on an RBI groundout by junior Jeremy Lea and another RBI single to centerfield from LeForestier in the second, this time scoring junior Ben Nemivant.
- Shortly thereafter, however, Cal responded right back with a four-spot the following inning, which included three solo home runs from the Golden Bears. Through three complete, Pacific still remained on top, 5-4.
- Evening the score, Steven Zobac blasted his first long ball of the season in the top of the fourth for Cal, as the game became knotted at five at the end of four innings.
- With neither team able to consistently continue their momentum over the next few innings, the Golden Bears broke out for their first lead of the night, 6-5, on a Quentin Selma single in the top of the seventh.
- Never quitting, the Tigers rallied for two runs of their own in the home half of the seventh, as Kirk forced a bases-loaded walk before junior James Arakawa reached on a sharp infield single that hit off the pitcher and scored LeForestier. Heading into the eighth, Pacific held a one-run advantage, 7-6.
- Becoming the second Tiger in the opening series to achieve this feat, junior Jackson Vaughan came in to deliver the final blow in the ninth, as the right-hander turned away Cal to notch his first save in the Orange & Black. With the 7-6 victory, Pacific secured the 3-1 series victory over the Golden Bears and former Pacific head coach Mike Neu to begin the 2021 season.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- LeForestier impressed by collecting three hits in four at bats with two RBI and two runs scored on Monday evening.
- Looking strong early, the Pacific bullpen enjoyed another fairly successful outing, combining for 6.0 innings in relief across four pitchers. In total, the relievers only allowed three hits and one earned run while also recording five total strikeouts.
- Delivering when called upon, Kirk finished with three RBI and one walk at the plate against the Golden Bears while Arakawa and senior Wyatt Hoffman each tallied two hits apiece.
