Tigers Top No. 5 Cal in Back and Forth Thriller

BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 6 Pacific men's water polo team made a splash in the East Bay on Sunday afternoon, toppling No. 5 California 14-12 at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley behind a four goal outing from Jeremie Cote and 16 saves from Jon Barry

Pacific earned just its eighth win over the Golden Bears in program history and starts the season 2-0 for the fourth consecutive season.

"That's a huge early season win against a perennial powerhouse," Pacific head coach James Graham said, "and we're excited about the bright future for this team this season. Jon Barry and Jeremie Cote played legit. The whole team did a great job. It was an exciting back and forth match in front of a big crowd. It was a great atmosphere and it was really important for our team to experience that type of championship atmosphere early in the season and learn how to stay composed and manage the game."

In Case You Missed It:
  • The scoring margin in all 32 minutes never eclipsed two, as Cal's and Pacific's offenses each answered each other when called upon.
  • Luke Pavillard led the team with 13 shots, but Cote again came up big in his second collegiate water polo match with four goals and two assists for a team high six points.
  • Barry saved a season high 16 shots, also registering a .571 save clip and a steal.
  • Pavillard and Luís Araya recorded three goals and two assists apiece while Ege Colak scored twice against the Bears.

First Period:
  • Cal struck first with two goals in the first three minutes, but Pavillard answered back off his first of a game high four steals, setting the scene for a back and forth trend that continued throughout the day.
  • The period's final four goals were put on the board in a span of under a minute and a half, including back to back scores from Ege Colak (2:25) and Andrea De Nardi (1:57) 28 seconds apart.
  • Cal answered to tie it at three with 1:20 left, but Luís Araya found the back of the net for the first of three times with just over a minute left (1:06).

Second Period:
  • Cal mirrored their first period start with two goals for a 5-4 lead before Pavillard punched back with his second.
  • Jeremie Cote scored twice in the final minute for the Tigers (0:47, 0:05), the latter coming just five seconds before the horn to give UOP an 8-7 lead at the halfway point.
  • Pacific and Cal matched each other goal for goal in the second period, each lighting up the scoreboard four times

Third Period:
  • The two teams matched each other for goals in the third period as well with two goals apiece. Matthew Hosmer (5:58) and Colak (5:02) found the net for Pacific.

Fourth Period:
  • Of Pacific's four goals in the period, its last three of the game were both on the power play and were assisted on.
  • Pacific outshot the Bears in the final frame 10-7 and limited them to just two shots in the final three minutes.
  • Cote led the Tigers with four goals, but it was his final score with 1:05 left that put the game away for good. The goal was only the second lead of the game for either team that exceeded one (Cal took a 7-5 lead at the three minute mark of the second).

Notables:
  • This is Pacific's first win over Cal since November 7, 2015 – an 11-10 decision in Berkeley in which both programs were tied for second in the CWPA national poll.
  • The win not only preserves the Tigers' fourth straight 2-0 record, it also extends their winning streak in Berkeley to three games.
  • Pacific squeaked by the Bears in the shots department on Sunday, topping Cal 39-38.
  • In just his second collegiate water polo game, Cote led Pacific with a game high four goals, this time on a perfect four shots.
  • Goalkeepers from each team matched each other shot for shot with both Pacific's Jon Barry and Cal's Adrian Weinberg registering 16 apiece. Barry posted the better save percentage though at .571 and had one steal to his credit.
