Box Score PROVO, Utah – The University of the Pacific baseball team closed out its season in a 6-5 victory over the Brigham Young University Cougars and took the series, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers finish 22-29 overall and 11-16 in the West Coast Conference, while the Cougars fall to 22-28 on the season and 11-16 in WCC play.
In the first inning, Pacific took advantage of a couple of errors on the Cougar defense to take a quick 1-0 lead, as Kevin Sandri scored on a throwing error. BYU answered back in the bottom half with a home run over the center field fence by Daniel Schneemann to tie the game, 1-1.
In the top of the second, the Tigers took the lead back in their favor, as Nate Verlin hit a one-out single to right field followed by Glover reaching on another Cougar error to place Verlin at third. Bradley Jekich stepped up and hit a two-out, two-run double to left field that scored Glover and Verlin for the 3-1 lead.
The Cougars tied the game back up 3-3 in the bottom of the third on a two-out, two-run single by Keaton Kringlen to score Brock Hale and Brennon Anderson.
At the top of the fourth, the Tigers scored the go-ahead run once again to lead, 4-3. Keaton Glover hit a one-out double to left center to place himself in scoring position causing the Cougars to make a pitching change. Glover advanced to third on a ground out followed by a two-out single by Sandri to right field to push Glover home.
The Orange and Black continued to increase the score in the sixth, as Glover hit another one-out double down the left field line. Sandri hit another two-out single to score Glover for the 5-3 lead. However, the Cougars answered back in the bottom half of the inning to cut in on the lead, 5-4.
BYU went on to tie the game once again in the bottom of the eighth, 5-5, after Nate Favero scored on a wild pitch.
It was not enough though, as a two-out double by Alex LeForestier pushed Jekich home to claim the 6-5 victory and the 2-1 series win to end the season.
"I am so proud of the way these men finished our journey together," said head coach Ryan Garko. "We fought to the very end, and this was another great team victory. I am thankful for our seniors and the legacy they leave behind. We have a great deal to build on here."
Pacific tallied 11 hits with five RBI and six runs. Sandri and Jekich led the offense with two RBI in two hits each. LeForestier registered three hits with one RBI. Glover notched two hits and three runs. Verlin and Carter Hayes round out the hitters with one hit each, while Verlin had one run.
On the mound, Shelby Lackey pitched seven innings with six strikeouts before Ryan Shreve came in and relieved him. Shreve picked up the win after two innings with one strikeout. Drew Zimmerman was charged with the loss after striking out four batters through three innings.
