Nevada Rallies Late to Claim 7-5 Victory Over Pacific

RENO, Nev. - The University of the Pacific baseball team fell 7-5 in a late rally by Nevada on Tuesday afternoon.

The Orange and Black fall to 14-21 on the season, while the Wolf Pack improve to 21-13 overall.

At the top of the second, the Tigers lit up with Lucas Halstead hitting a single up the middle to lead off. With one out, Halstead managed to land on second off an error by the Wolfpack. Carter Hayes ended up getting walked to place runners on first and second. Kevin Sandri pushed Halstead and Hayes to third and second on a ground out.

With two outs, a second error by Nevada allowed Keaton Glover to land on first and scored Halstead and Hayes for the quick 2-0 lead. Matthew Tarantino notched the last hit of the inning with a double to shortstop to score Glover to push the lead up to 3-0.

After three scoreless innings from the third to the fifth, the Tigers pushed the lead up to 5-0 at the top of the sixth. James Free hit a leadoff double to left center to set up scoring position. Halstead stepped up and reached on a fielding error by Nevada which pushed Free to third. Bradley Jekich scored Free with a sacrifice fly to right field and gave Pacific a 4-0 lead.

From there, Kevin Sandri doubled down the right field line to score Hayes for the 5-0 lead before the inning ended.

However, it was not enough, as Nevada battled back to score two in the bottom of the seventh and five in the bottom of the eighth to take the 7-5 victory over the Tigers.

Tarantino and Free each had two hits, while Nate Verlin, Halstead and Sandri each had one. Tarantino, Jekich, and Sandri all had one RBI. Hayes scored two of the five runs for Pacific with Free, Halstead and Glover each scoring one run to combine for the other three runs scored.

Justin Giovannoni was charged with the loss, while Austin Dick picked up the win for the Wolf Pack after pitching one inning with one strikeout. Keone Cabinian earned the save.

The Tigers return to action at home hosting Saint Mary's College for a three-game series starting on Friday, April 20 with first pitch set for 6:00 p.m.
