Tigers Fall Short To Northern Colorado, 5-2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

STOCKTON, Calif. - In day two of the Libby Matson Tournament, the Pacific Tigers were unable to pull away from Big Sky opponent Northern Colorado as the Orange and Black fell to the Bears by a final score of 5-2.

The Tigers drop to an overall record of 6-6 on the season. The Bears improve to 6-6 as well.

Pacific put the first points up on the board to start off the night as leadoff hitter Talli Shepherd singled then advanced to second off a throwing error by the Bears. Following a ground-out play by Hailey Reed which advanced Shepherd, the freshman infielder scored off of a wild pitch to put her team up 1-0 in the first.

Shepherd currently has 16 hits on the year, second-best for the Tigers behind Samantha Owen (17), and has tallied in a hit in seven of her last eight games for Pacific.

Northern Colorado assembled a run of their own in the second, however, as Marissa Young gave up a double to left center which brought in two runners to have the Bears take the lead, 2-1.

Despite a tremendous effort throughout the night, Young was unable to find a rhythm in the circle as the Bears utilized a two-run push in the second and seventh to get ahead of the senior pitcher. Young pitched a full seven innings of work and finished with 10 hits, five earned runs, and eight strikeouts.

The Tigers found their way back in the game in the fifth inning, as Shepherd reached on a fielder's choice and Reed followed it up with a single to put runners on at first and second. Samantha Owen then singled to right field which scored Shepherd and cut the deficit down to 3-2.

Pacific was unable to take the lead after that point, however, as four straight singles given up by Young in the seventh brought home two additional insurance runs for Northern Colorado and led them to victory.

The Tigers could not capitalize on opportunities down the stretch, leaving seven players on base and going 3-13 with runners on.

"We can't win ball games when we get out-hit and out-pitched," Head Coach Brian Kolze said. "This should be a wake up call...we can't rely on the same people when others get the same opportunities."

Pacific resumes Libby Matson play on Saturday with a game against Seattle at 2:30 PM and a rematch with Northern Colorado at 4:45 PM.
