Pacific vs. CSU Bakersfield
The Tigers pushed their win streak to three games in a rematch against CSU Bakersfield on Saturday. Bethany Hammer made quick work in her first official start, pitching six shutout innings and allowing just four hits with four strikeouts.
"Bethany did great in her first career start," said Kolze. "I think she did a good job coming out strong and we cleaned some things up today defensively."
Hammer along with freshmen Megan Fields, Talli Shepherd, and Madeline Domingo all started for Pacific.
"We had a chance to start all of our freshman today and I think that was big for us," Kolze said. "It gave them a chance to get some good experience and our veterans did a good job helping them out as well."
Pacific once again got off to a hot start, scoring one run in the first and second inning to go up 2-0 against the Roadrunners. The Tigers have scored in the first inning in six out of their eight games on the season.
Shepherd had a good day at the plate, going 3-4 with one RBI and three runs scored. The Wichita, Kansas native has been a pivotal piece in her first season with the Orange and Black leading the team with 12 hits and placing second in runs with seven. Shepherd also has three of the Tigers' four stolen bases.
Hailey Reed also was strong at bat for Pacific, going a perfect 4-4 on the day with one RBI. Reed and Shepherd combined for seven of the Tigers' 14 total hits against the Roadrunners.
Sydney Lahners and Samantha Owen each chipped in an RBI for Pacific to help their team pull away.
Pacific vs. Fresno State
Pacific fell behind early against Fresno State in the first inning as Hailey Reed gave up two runs off one hit. The Tigers trailed 2-0 following the inning.
Reed's struggles continued in the second inning as the Topeka, Kansas native gave up four hits and three RBI, one of the hits being a three-RBI triple by Fresno State's Rohleder. Reed finished the day with six hits, five earned runs, and one strikeout.
Pacific fought back in the third, however, as Ralen Estrada, Shepherd, and Fields hit three straight singles to load the bases. After a fielder's choice that got Estrada out at home plate, Lahners followed it up with a walk in her at bat bringing home Shepherd and scoring the Tigers' first run of the game. Sellers then tallied in an RBI off a hit by pitch, cutting the lead to 6-2.
"I think we did a great job of fighting back but [Fresno] just hit the ball really well and kept the advantage on us," said Kolze.
In the top of the fifth, Lahners rocked a ball to left center field to put the Tigers back in position, 10-4. This was Lahners' fourth home run of the tournament and her fifth overall for the season.
"Lahners has been playing unbelieveable," Kolze said. "She's been someone who doesn't crack under pressure and as a senior when things haven't gone our way she's been willing to take on the challenge of getting her team back in the game."
The Tigers scored once more in the seventh but fell to the Bulldogs with a final score of 10-5.
"You got to tip your cap to the other team. If you give them a sliver they're definitely going to take advantage and that's what they did tonight," said Kolze. "We kept the game within striking distance but against a team like that you can't give up big runs and unfortunately that happened."
The Orange and Black conclude their weekend series at the Bulldog Classic with their second game against UC Davis. Pacific beat the Aggies 9-6 on Friday with help from Sydney Lahners knocking in two home runs.
