DAVIS, Calif. - It was a full day of tennis for the Pacific men's tennis team as they powered through day two at the Aggie Invitational, while Bernardo Oliveira, Tadiwa Chinamo, Johnathan Lieu, Daniel Orlita and Akram El Sallaly competed unattached from Pacific in the Stockton Men's Challenger.
At the Aggie Invite, Hampton continued his run through his bracket as he flew through his first match with ease, 6-2, 6-1. In his second match, he rolled over Thomas Wright from Cal in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Hampton moves on to round four on Sunday.
Watson competed in the consolation bracket where he faced off against Vasileios Illiopoulos of Santa Clara, an opponent the Tigers will see again in the spring. Watson won his first match, 6-4, 7-6(1) and was then paired up against host, Davis where he fell 6-2, 7-5.
Solbas had to default his match due to injury.
In the Stockton Men's Challenger, a $100,000 ATP Pro Circuit Challenger hosted at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center, five Tigers competed unattached at Pacific in an effort to earn ATP points.
Oliveira, a wildcard in the Challenger, was the first Tiger to open up the qualifying draw as he rolled over his American opponent in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 to move onto the second round of qualifying.
In the third group of matches Saturday, Chinamo battled Collin Altamirano of Sacramento in his first match of the tournament. The first set was back and forth and the Zimbabwe native was down 3-4 before turning on the jets and taking the match 6-4. After dropping the second set, 6-2, the chance to move on in the Challenger was contingent on the third and final set. Altamirano continued his momentum and defeated Chinamo, 6-0 to win the third set and the match.
Orlita and Lieu were randomly selected to go head-to-head against one another as both were given wildcards to enter the tournament. The teammates squared away on Stadium Court where Lieu was victorious over Orlita, 6-3, 6-3 and will move on to the second round of qualifying, which will extend to Sunday.
Hampton and Watson continue play at the Aggie Invitational for the final day on Sunday.
On Sunday in the Stockton Men's Challenger, Lieu will face the four-seeded Sekou Bangoura, while Oliveira will do battle with Argentinian, Matias Franco Descotte.
