Tigers Edged By #25 San Diego, 1-0

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Pacific baseball team held No. 25 San Diego to one run, but it was enough to hold up as the Toreros took game two of the WCC series, 1-0, Friday in San Diego.

Danny Mayer went 2-for-4 for Pacific, while Matt Tarantino, Lucas Halstead and Ryan Schalch added a hit each.

Pacific pitchers Cooper Casad, Justin Giovannoni, Jordon Gonzalez and Vince Arobio allowed just one run as they scattered 11 hits.

But Chris Murphy and Troy Conyers combined for the shutout for San Diego. Murphy picked up the win, going seven innings, with five hits surrendered and seven strikeouts. Conyers recorded his ninth save, with four strikeouts in two innings, walking one.

Casad started and held San Diego in check for the first four innings, but the Tigers only put together four hits through five off Murphy.

In the bottom of the fifth, Casad hit a batter, and Hunter Mercado-Hood doubled to right center for a 1-0 lead. Giovannoni came in from the bullpen and picked up a pair of outs to stranded the bases loaded and avoid further damage.

The Toreros put a runner on second in the sixth, with Gonzalez taking over for Gionvannoni and coaxing a ground out to end the inning.

In the seventh, Halstead drew a leadoff walk, and Mayer added a one-out single to set up first and third, but a short flyout to right field and a strikeout from Murphy ended the inning.

Pacific put two on in the eighth, as Preston Moebius walked and Kevin Sandri reached on an error with no one out. But Conyers was aided by a double-play ball and then recorded a strikeout to end the inning.

The Tigers went down in order in the ninth on strike outs and Conyers and San Diego held on.

Gionvannoni allowed just a hit and a walk in 1.1 innings, while Gonzalez walked none and surrendered two hits in 1.1 innings. Arobio faced five in the eighth, with a shutout frame. Casad was saddled with the hard-luck loss, tossing 4.1 innings with six hits and a pair of strikeouts.

San Diego improves to 24-9 overall, 11-3 in the West Coast Conference. Pacific falls to 12-20 overall and 2-12 in the WCC.

Game three of the series is set for 1 p.m. Saturday.
