Men's Tennis Opens WCC With Win Over USF

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific men's tennis team opened West Coast Conference play with a 4-3 victory over San Francisco Saturday afternoon at Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.

Pacific clinched the match 4-3 on a victory by Alex Giannini after USF came back from 3-2 deficit on court three.

The Tigers picked up the doubles point as Giannini & Bernardo Oliveira opened with a 6-3 win over Woravin Kumthonkittikul & Paul Giraud at third doubles.

On court one, Akram El Sallaly & Tadiwa Chinamo topped Christian Brockstedt & Mert Zincirli, 6-4, while Ross Watson & Miguel Diaz led Ryan Marker & Johan Joenhagen, 5-2, when the match went unfinished.

In singles, Joenhagen drew the Dons even with a 6-2, 6-4, win over Chinamo at second singles. But the Tigers answered right back as Diaz swept Zincirli, 6-4, 6-1 at first singles.

Kumthonkittkul tied the match at 2-2 with a win on court six over Oliveira, 6-2, 6-2.

At fifth singles, Watson rallied from down 5-2 in set two for a 6-4, 7-6 win over Giraud. But Oliver Poysti held on for a win over Akram El Sallaly, 6-4, 6-4 at fourth singles to tie the match at 3-3.

Giannini won the first set against Marker, but Marker answered back with a set two win. Giannini opened set three with a 3-0 lead and closed the door on Marker, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 to give the Tigers a 1-0 start in the WCC.

"What a great competition and a fantastic way to start conference play," head coach Ryan Redondo said. "The 4-3 battles are what college tennis is all about. We competed as a team from start to finish. Alex, Miguel and Ross played discipline tennis which exemplified so much freedom. I'm really happy for them."

Pacific improves to 7-7 overall, while USF falls to 4-9 overall and 0-2 in WCC play.

The Tigers will be back in action on Monday at Fresno State at 1 p.m.
