FORT WORTH, Texas – No. 12-ranked TCU earned a 4-0 victory over Pacific on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of TCU Regional being played at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The TCU Regional is one of 15 sites in the 2017 ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
In the first meeting ever between the programs, No. 1-seed TCU (2-1) won both doubles matches against No. 4-seed Pacific (2-1), as Reese Stalder and Jerry Lopez picked up their second-straight victory at the No. 1 position with a 6-2 win over the tandem of Alex Giannini and Tadiwa Chinamo. Alex Rybakov and Guillermo Nuñez followed just seconds later with a 6-2 win on court two over Ross Watson and Akram El Sallaly.
"TCU did a good job in doubles and took it to us," Pacific coach Ryan Redondo said. "However, once singles started, we really came out and gave ourselves a great opportunity. We lost at 2 and 4 relatively quickly. However, we were in dogfights at 1-3-5-6. I thought if Tadiwa at 1 extended his match to a third set, we could of had an epic battle."
In singles action, Stalder took down Giannini, 6-3, 6-0 on court four to put TCU up 2-0 in the match. Nuñez grabbed a straight-set victory of his own at the No. 2 spot with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Miguel Diaz for the third point. Rybakov proved to be the clincher for the match after defeating Chinamo on court one 6-4, 6-4.
Dating back to the 2015 season, TCU has now won 31-straight matches on the Bernard J. 'Tut' Bartzen Varsity Courts.
"We need to quickly learn from this because there is a lot we can take away with this competition and look to improve tomorrow versus Wichita State," Redondo commented. "They will tough and experienced, and I expect a great match."
The Tigers face No. 3-seed Wichita State on Sunday in the TCU Regional consolation match. First serve is set for 10 a.m. PT.
