Volleyball Topped By Missouri State

Honolulu, Hawai'i - The Pacific volleyball team wrapped the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic with a 3-0 loss to Missouri State, 25-14, 25-23, 25-19 late Saturday.

Lexi Elman led Pacific with 10 kills, nine digs and three blocks, while Ashlyn Fleming added six kills, a pair of aces and a pair of blocks. Alex Holt added six kills on 12 swings to hit .417 with a pair of blocks, while Andie Shelton posted 14 assists, five digs and two blocks.

Jessica Diederich tallied 11 assists while Sien Gallop posted three kills and an ace, and Katrin Gotterba added 14 digs. Maycie LaBass tallied nine digs and an ace off the bench for Pacific.

The Tigers and Bears had four ties early in set one before Missouri State took an 8-5 lead on three-straight points. The fourth block of the set by the Bears put Missouri State out front, 15-9, part of a 13-4 run as the Bears seized control. The Tigers picked up points on kills from Elman and Fleming, but the Bears' 5-0 block advantage propelled them to a 25-14 set one win.

In set two, Pacific jumped out to a 5-1 lead, as Elman and Maycie LaBass served up aces. Alex Holt added a kill, but the Bears reeled off a 4-1 run to tie the set at 11-11. Fleming answered with a kill and an ace, but the Bears' Lily Johnson and Lynsey Wright put Missouri State up 18-17. Holt tied the set at 18, but the Bears posted three-straight points. A Fleming & Elman block and an Elman kill brought Pacific within 23-22. Holt staved off set point, but Missouri took the set on a service error, 25-23.

In set three, Missouri State tallied the first four points and took a 10-4 lead. The Tigers pulled within 12-7, but found themselves down eight at 17-9. Elman, Janie Feldsher and Diederich posted kills while Holt and Feldsher teamed for a block, bringing Pacific within 18-13. But back-to-back points by the Bears allowed Missouri State maintain a comfortable margin. Gallop added an ace and a kill, and Elman her 10th kill to pull within 24-19, but Simone House provided the winner for the Bears.

Aubrey Cheffey led Misouri State with 11 kills, while Johnson added 10 and Wright six. Missouri State hit .283 for the match to the Tigers' .108.

Pacific falls to 2-4 on the year after an 0-3 against three teams ranked or receiving votes in the current AVCA Top 25. No. 8 UCLA, No. 15 Hawai'i, and a Missouri State team which was 30th in votes in the preseason poll.

The Tigers will return to the mainland to host the Pacific Community Classic next Friday and Saturday. Pacific welcomes Northern Colorado, Oregon State and South Dakota to Stockton. Action gets underway Friday with South Dakota and Northern Colorado at 10 a.m., followed by South Dakota and Oregon State at 2 p.m. Pacific will face Northern Colorado at 6 p.m. on Friday.
