Women's Soccer Falls to No. 18 UConn

Box Score

Storrs, Conn. – No. 18 UConn proved to be too much for the Tigers as they took the 1-0 victory over Pacific Friday afternoon. Goalie Lena Perry logged a career-high 16 saves against the Huskies, who registered 31 shots in the game.

In what would have been a historic upset, the Tigers fell just short of earning their first win of 2016. UConn got on the board early when Tiger goalie Lena Perry blocked a shot but couldn't smother the ball; allowing the deflection to trickle to forward Stephanie Ribeiro who was able to tap it in for the first score of the day and the eventual difference maker.

The Orange and Black saw a handful of chances in the first half to knot the score but couldn't find a way to convert. In the 22nd minute Sigrid Aas, who already has one goal on the year, fired a promising shot from beyond the box, however it just sailed wide left and the Huskies escaped the Tiger attack. Right before halftime Ellie Papalexiou saw her shot beat UConn 'keeper Emily Armstrong but the ball met the crossbar and sailed out of play.

After surrendering a goal early in the game, Perry came out strong in the second half; registering six saves in the first eight minutes following the intermission. Ribeiro, who got the best of Perry earlier in the game, took a header in the 48th minute that looked like it would find the back of the net. However Perry used her quick hands to punched the shot up and out, denying the Huskies.

In another promising opportunity for the Tigers, Katelyn Chandler beat her defender in the 64th minute and had only the goalie in sight. The freshman fired off a shot that bested Armstrong, but just drifted wide right and the Tigers were shut down yet again.

Five days after recording a career-high 13 saves, Perry registered 16 against the talented UConn team who averages 1.25 goals-per-game. The senior saw plenty of action in the 90 minutes of play, including 23 shots in the second half alone.

The road trip continues Sunday when Pacific heads to Boston College to face the Eagles. The kickoff is scheduled for 9 AM PST and live stats will be available.
