Box Score Stanford, Calif. - On a beautiful night for Softball at Smith Family Stadium at Stanford, the Pacific softball team was upended by a seven-run fourth frame from the Cardinal. Pacific scored first and picked up single runs in the first three innings before Stanford struck for three in the third and seven in the fourth. The Tigers fall to 17-14 on the season while Stanford improves to 13-17 on the season.
After both pitchers twirled perfect frames in the first inning, Pacific struck for a run in the top of the second off of Haley Snyder (7-7). Rachel Sellers, the reigning WCC player of the week, doubled to right center and with two out, Molly Bourne singled to left field, plating Sellers for a 1-0 Pacific lead.
Kenya Lindstrom (4-5) shut down the Cardinal in the bottom of the second, and Pacific went back to work in the top of the third. Taylor Covington, making the start at designated player, picked up her first career hit to lead off the inning ahead of a walk to Sara Anderson. With two down, Sellers again singled, plating Covington for a 2-0 advantage.
Stanford pushed across three in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead as Molly Fowkes singled ahead of a Kylie Sorenson double to the wall in right field. After two were down, pitcher Haley Snyder helped her own cause with a three-run homer to left center field for a 3-2 lead. After Whitney Burks doubled off the right field wall, Lindstrom induced a line out off the bat of Victoria Molina to end the threat and the inning, as Sara Anderson made a diving catch to keep the Cardinal from extending the lead.
Pacific tied the score at 3-3 in the fourth inning as Gustafson led off the inning with a single and after two groundouts moved her to third, Covington delivered an RBI single.
The bottom of the fourth frame started with back-to-back soft singles for Stanford before Gustafson took over in the circle for Lindstrom. Gustafson struggled allowing two hit batters and a wild pitch that scored a run for a 4-3 Stanford lead. After Megan Walters took over in the circle, with Gustafson going back to third, the Cardinal blew the game open with five straight singles to take a 10-3 lead.
Snyder set Pacific down in the fifth, despite Sellers' third hit of the contest, and Walters surrendered a hit from Savannah Schulze and a walk to Sorensen before a wild pitch moved the run necessary for a run-rule victory to third. After Jessica Plaza struck out for the first out of the inning, Snyder punched a single through the left side of the infield, scoring Schulze to end the contest in the fifth.
Sellers continued her stellar season with a 3-3 night while Covington picked up her first career hit and RBI. Snyder tallied five RBI to lead the charge for the Cardinal while Lauren Wegner went 3-3 and Whitney Burks added a pair of hits.
Pacific will now return home to open the West Coast Conference season against Santa Clara at home on Saturday. The conference opening doubleheader is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m.
