Tigers Drop Series Finale To San Diego

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - In the finale of a three game set with the visiting San Diego Toreros, the Pacific Softball team dropped an 11-2 decision in five innings. The Tigers sit at 19-22 on the season (2-7 WCC) while San Diego now is 19-26 on the year, (5-4 WCC).

Kenya Lindstrom (4-7) got the start for the Tigers and San Diego put up a three spot against the freshman in the top of the first inning as Taylor Spence singled, Kailey Hill followed with a single through the left side of the infield and Lauren Kane homered to left for a 3-0 advantage. Molly Bourne robbed Danielle Mavridis of a hit to end the inning, diving for a ball in left field to end the threat.

Undaunted, Pacific got to work offensively against USD starter Megan Sabbatini (12-15) in the bottom of the first. Sara Anderson singled up the middle to leadoff the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch, the next hitter, Melanie Habib, doubled to center field, scoring Anderson to make the score 3-1. Pacific then cut the advantage to 3-2 with a Rachel Sellers single to left field, plating Habib.

After Lindstrom stranded a pair in scoring position in the top of the second, Sabbatini followed with a scoreless frame of her own. In the top of the third inning, Lindstrom got into some trouble with one out. Tatum Schutlz doubled to left center and Mary Grabowski followed with an RBI single. Megan Walters relieved Lindstorm in the circle and immediately got two quick outs, limiting the damage to just one run as San Diego took a 4-2 lead.

Sabbatini again fired a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the third before the Toreros offense went to work in the top of the fourth with a two out rally. With two down, Spence singled up the middle and advanced to third on a Hill double. San Diego followed with five consecutive singles, plating four runs for an 8-2 advantage. Bourne again made a great grab in left field to end the inning.

Sellers gave Pacific some life in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff single, but Sabbatini retired the rest of the side in order. Hill homered off new pitcher Cassidy Gustafson in the top of the fifth to give the visitors a 10-2 lead. Grabowski hit a sacrifice fly for the 11th run of the contest. Sabbatini struck out the side in the fifth to send USD to a run-rule victory in Stockton.

Sellers was the sole Tiger with a multi-hit game, striking for two singles. Lauren Kane led the way for the visitors with a two-hit, four RBI day. Spence, Hill, Kane, Schultz and Grabowski each had multi-hit games for the visitors.

Pacific will next be in action on Friday as West Coast Conference play continues at Bill Simoni Field. The Tigers will take on BYU twice on Friday (4:00 p.m/6:00 p.m.) before wrapping up action with Senior Day on Saturday (12:00 p.m.)
