Box Score Stockton, Calif. – The Tigers were unable to come away with the series win against Northwestern today as Pacific dropped the last game of the four-game series 14-5. Pacific had won both games in the Saturday doubleheader after falling on Friday but had to settle for the 2-2 series tie. The Tigers are now 2-6 on the season while Northwestern moves to 4-4.
Bryce Lombardi was the man with a plan on the mound for Pacific but ended up taking his second loss of the year, falling to 0-2. Shelby Lackey relieved the fifth-year senior in the fourth inning and pitched two innings of three-run ball before Toby Woods came in for one batter. Grant Shives also pitched in relief for Pacific, going three innings.
Cooper Wetherbee was the starter for Northwestern but was replaced after just 2.1 innings by Jake Stolley. Stolley earned the win, his first of the year, by pitching 4.2 innings and allowing just one run on three hits. Dan Kubiuk pitched the last two innings of the game, holding Pacific scoreless.
After putting up four hits, including a double and a homerun, in yesterday's doubleheader, Danny Mayer started the game with a single through the right side. It was only the second single of the year for Mayer, who has torn the cover off the ball to the tune of two doubles and two homers already.
The Wildcats scored four runs in the second inning as Pacific committed two errors in the inning. An RBI single brought home the first run of the game after an error made it first and second with no outs. Willie Bourbon doubled down the rightfield line to drive in a run, with a second run coming in on a throwing error. Bourbon took third on the play, then scored on a groundout to make it 4-0.
Bourbon would hurt Pacific all day, ending the game 4-for-5 with a double and a triple as well as four RBI. He was one of nine Northwestern hitters to record an RBI in the game.
Kevin Sandri continued his hot weekend with an RBI double in the bottom of the second. It was his first extra-base hit in college. The freshman sent a low liner just inside third base to the corner, allowing Lucas Halstead to score from third with ease. Jimmy Boras followed up Sandri with an RBI single straight up the middle to make it 4-2. The pair, hitting eighth and ninth in the order, drove in six runs this weekend. Neither had a collegiate RBI before facing Northwestern.
Northwestern added three more runs in the third. A single and a HBP put two on and a triple to left just over the glove of a diving Mayer cleared the bases. The Wildcats managed a single over Lombardi's head to drive in the third run of the inning. J.P. Yakel killed Northwestern's threat with a cannon throw to catch Grant Peikart trying to steal.
The Tigers chased Wetherbee in the third with a pair of RBI doubles. Gio Brusa blasted the ball to deep center, where it pushed off the centerfielder's glove to allow Mayer to score from first. Halstead sent the next pitch deep into rightfield, letting Brusa jog in to make it 7-4. Halstead would end the day with three hits, matching Nate Verlin, who also went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
A bloop single for the Wildcats that bounced in front of Brusa's outstretched glove made it 8-4 Northwestern. Another single followed, driving in the runner on third. A single to center added a tenth run in the fifth.
Three straight singles with two outs in the fifth helped Pacific cut into the lead. Verlin ended up with an RBI, depositing in the ball in rightfield for a deep single that scored J.J. Wagner from second. The Tigers scored four of their five runs in the game with two outs, continually putting together rallies late in innings.
Northwestern scored three times in the seventh to extend their lead. A sacrifice bunt put two in scoring position, both of who came around to score on singles to the outfield.
Joey Mejia and Vinny Margiotta all made their season debuts in the ninth inning. Miles Haddad pitched that inning, the first time in his three years at Pacific he has pitched. Haddad retired all three batters he faced in a stellar display.
Pacific will travel to San Jose on Tuesday for one game against the San Jose State Spartans. After that, it is back home for the Tigers to host Northern Colorado in a four-game series beginning Friday, March 4. Tickets for all home games are available online.
