Box Score 2 San Luis Obispo, Calif. – The Pacific Tigers fell in extra innings in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday. Pacific had 16 hits but scored just 6 runs, losing 7-6 to the Cal Poly Mustangs after a walkoff single in the bottom of the tenth inning ended the game.
Freshman Ricky Reynoso made his collegiate debut for the Tigers, starting the game and going 6 innings. Reynoso fought through early jitters that saw Cal Poly take a 3-0 lead in the first. Reynoso was unhittable for after that, retiring 12 straight after giving up a triple to start the second inning. The freshman allowed just one more baserunner the entire game before leaving after six innings for Jordon Gonzalez.
Cam Schneider also made his first collegiate start for Cal Poly. The Tigers chased the Mustang freshman after 2.2 innings. Schneider allowed 2 runs and 5 hits before leaving the game. Andrew Bernstein replaced him, giving up 3 runs in 3 innings of work.
Cal Poly's Alex McKenna put the home team on top early with a homerun to lead off the bottom of the first. Reynoso struck out Cooper Moore and Alex Smith looking to end the inning but not before an RBI walk and a hit batsman made it 3-0.
Louis Mejia kept up his hot streak from the day before, singling in the top of the second. Mejia singled in his first five at-bats of the season, going 3-for-3 in the season opener and adding two singles today before grounding out in the fifth inning. The senior second baseman would end the day 3-for-6 with 2 RBI.
J.J. Wagner brought Mejia home for Pacific's first run with a booming double in the second inning. Dylan Robertson came up to bat after that a wrapped a single past the shortstop for his first-ever collegiate hit. Both Wagner and Robertson ended the day with two hits, with Wagner going 2-for-4 with 1 RBI and Robertson going 2-for-6.
McKenna tripled to start the second inning for Cal Poly. Reynoso kept the Mustangs off the base paths after that, retiring the next three hitters in order, but a sacrifice fly made it 4-1. McKenna was the last baserunner Reynoso would allow until a leadoff single in the sixth inning as the freshman retired 15 of the final 16 batters he faced in the game.
The Tigers offense kept chipping away at the lead in the third inning when Lucas Halstead sent a screaming line drive double down the rightfield line. Brusa took a pitch off the foot after that, with a walk by Nate Verlin loading the bases with two outs. Mejia singled again to drive in a run, forcing a pitching change.
The dangerous bats of Brusa and Mayer continued to wreak havoc on Cal Poly in the fifth inning. Brusa singled, Mayer doubled, and the Tigers added a third run when Verlin grounded out to advance the runners. Mejia was finally retired for the first time this season but still managed to drive in a run with a groundout to even it up at 4-4.
Pacific kept up the offensive in the sixth. Jimmy Boras beat out a bunt single after a flyout to start the inning. Kevin Sandri singled to center for his first career hit after that before Brusa drove in the fifth run of the game for the Tigers with another single, giving the senior 2 RBI in two games.
Mayer added the first Tiger homer of the year in the seventh inning to stretch the lead to two runs. It was the third extra-base hit of the year for Mayer, who doubled Friday night as well as earlier in the game. The homerun made it 6-4 Tigers, giving them their first lead of the season.
Cal Poly tied the game in the eighth when Josh George singled with the bases loaded to score two, making it 6-6.
Fineas Del Bonta-Smith came on in relief in the ninth inning and promptly struck out the first collegiate batter he had ever faced. Del Bonta-Smith would end up the losing pitcher in the game after a seeing-eye single in the bottom of the tenth scored Cal Poly's Michael Sanderson from second.
Jarred Zill earned the win for Cal Poly with 0.2 innings of scoreless baseball.
The Cal Poly series will finish up with the fourth and final game on Sunday, February 21 at 1:00 pm.
