Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific women's tennis team fell 5-2 to Cal State Fullerton Friday at Brookside Country Club despite wins from Viktoriya Dzyuba and Katie Dyson.
Dzyuba posted a singles victory over Alexis Valenzuela in the first flight, 6-3, 6-1. Dyson rallied to win her fourth singles match-up against Karla Portalatin, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
But Camille De Leon defeated Cristina Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, at second singles, while Sarah Nuno posted answered back to down Maayan Sela at third singles, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Sabrina Rodriguez fell at the fifth single spot to Masako Makiba, 7-6 (4), 6-4, while Yuki Asami was topped by Danielle Pham, 6-3, 7-5.
Fullerton took the doubles point as Portalatin and Makiba took a 6-1 win in second doubles over Sela and Dyson, 6-1. Pham and Nuno topped Asami and Anneroos Nederstigt, 6-3.
Dzyuba and Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz versus Valenzuela and De Leon went unfinished.
"Today was another great test against a tough team," head coach Charlotte Scatliffe said "We got very needed experiences individually and as a team that will certainly improve us as a whole. Viktoriya stepped up in singles after a close doubles match convincingly and we battled in all positions with half of the matches ending three setters. Overall, we still have a lot to improve on but we are also ahead of the game in certain areas as well. This is a great group of girls who are tough and really want it. We will keep working to get there."
The Tigers fall to 3-4 on the season, while Cal State Fullerton improves to 5-1.
Pacific will travel to San Luis Obispo to take on Cal Poly on Sunday at 11 a.m.
