Box Score Los Angeles - The Pacific volleyball team rallied from an 0-2 hole for a 3-2 win at Loyola Marymount Thursday night at Gersten Pavilion.
Lexi Elman racked up 24 kills with 12 digs and four blocks while Ashlyn Fleming came on late to finish with 10 kills. Janie Feldsher tallied seven kills and nine blocks, while Emily Baptista added seven kills. Jessica Diederich handed out 20 assists, with Andie Shelton posting 29 assists with four kills. Katrin Gotterba pulled up 16 digs with eight assists and a service ace.
Pacific improves to 14-9 overall, 8-3 in the West Coast Conference, while LMU falls to 14-9, and 5-6 in WCC play.
It looked bleak after two sets for the Tigers, who hit .104 before intermission, but Pacific stormed back to hit .341 in the final three sets to come roaring back.
The Lions took a 9-7 lead in set one as the Tigers offense struggled to get on track. The Lions extended the lead to 13-9 on a kill from Savannah Slattery and back-to-back errors by the Tigers allowed the Lions to push the lead to 18-12. Elman tallied a kill to bring Pacific within five at 22-17, but the Lions wrapped the set on kills from Sarah Sponcil and Jamie Lea, 25-18.
In set two, Shelton and Elman posted early kills as the Tigers led 4-3. LMU took an 8-6 lead on a kill from Sponcil before Elman answered with a kill. But a block from the Lions put LMU up top 10-7. Baptista and Slattery traded kills before Feldsher and Elman tallied to bring the Tigers within 15-13. Elman delivered a kill to tie the set at 14-14. Out of a timeout, Elman blocked an attempt and then added a kill for a 16-14 Pacific lead. Gotterba served up an ace as the Tigers stretched the lead to 19-16. The Lions closed within 20-19 before Elman answered. Baptista created a two-point margin at 22-20, but Lea tallied for LMU and the Lions took a 24-23 lead on an block. Feldsher staved off set point with a kill, but the Lions took a 26-24 lead with back-to-back blocks.
The Tigers opened to a 4-1 lead in set three on a pair of kills from Ashlyn Fleming. Baptista stretched the lead to 7-3, and Shelton served up an ace. Elman's kill gave the Tigers a 10-5 lead. Elman struck again for a 16-8 advantage. Feldsher provided a 20-9 lead with back-to-back kills. Skylar Wine and Elman added kills as the Tigers extended the match with a 25-17 win. The Tigers hit .478 in the set.
In set four, Feldsher and Wine recorded a trio of blocks to give the Tigers an 8-5 lead. Shelton set Elman for a 12-7 advantage, Fleming and Baptista tacked on kills to maintain a 16-11 lead. Elman tallied two-more kills, but Sponcil responded as LMU stayed within 19-15, Elman delivered two more kills before a pair of LMU errors sealed the win, 25-19. Pacific hit .333 in set four, while holding the Lions to .118 hitting.
Elman and Fleming opened set five with kills, and a block from Feldsher and Baptista kept the Tigers in front 4-2. Shelton helped Pacific seize control with an ace, and a block from Elman and Feldsher pushed the margin to 8-3 at the switch. Elman tallied again for a 10-5 lead, and Fleming slammed the door with two kills and a block on match point to complete the comeback. Pacific held the Lions to .043 hitting in set five, while hitting .231.
Pacific out-blocked LMU 7-3 in the final two sets and trailed just once in the final three sets.
It was the first win for the Tigers when trailing 0-2 this season. Pacific remains in third in the WCC, a half game back of BYU (8-2), who takes on San Diego (10-0) on Friday.
The Tigers will face Pepperdine on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Malibu.
